Meta AI Chatbots Controversy: Scarlett Johansson and Celebs Targeted

Reuters reported that during testing, the bots would sometimes insist that they were the real celebrity, inviting users for meet-ups or “romantic” interactions. One Taylor Swift bot, which was created by a Meta employee, even reportedly suggested a “love story” scenario involving the singer, inviting the reporter to her Nashville home and tour bus for explicit or implied romantic interactions.

Meta confirmed that AI-generated imagery of public figures in compromising positions violates their policies, emphasizing that while creating images of public figures is allowed, anything nude, intimate, or sexually suggestive is strictly prohibited. The company also highlighted that impersonating public figures directly through AI is against the rules. Still, these unauthorized chatbots had already been widely shared on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, some accumulating more than 10 million interactions.
This isn’t the first time Meta has faced scrutiny for AI behavior. Earlier reports found that some AI chatbots were engaging in romantic or sensual conversations with minors, prompting a Senate investigation. In response, Meta stated that its AI chatbots are now being trained to avoid engaging in inappropriate romantic conversations or discussions involving self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders with teenage users.
The situation has sparked a lot of conversation about the ethics of AI, celebrity privacy, and how tech companies manage user-generated AI content.
