Mexican Singer Ernesto Barajas Fatally Shot Amid Threats
Hey, I want to talk about some tragic news that’s been making headlines in Mexico. Ernesto Barajas, the 38-year-old lead singer of the regional Mexican band Enigma Norteño, was shot and killed on Tuesday in Zapopan, part of the Guadalajara metropolitan area in Jalisco. The attack happened in a car lot, and unfortunately, one of his companions also died. In addition, a woman who happened to be passing by was seriously injured during the shooting.
According to witnesses and local reports, Barajas was inside a vehicle at the lot when two armed men on a motorcycle approached and opened fire. The scene was quickly cordoned off by local police, and forensic experts from the state prosecutor’s office collected evidence. An official investigation has been opened by the Jalisco authorities to determine who was responsible.
Barajas was originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, and he gained widespread recognition as the frontman of Enigma Norteño, a band formed in 2004 that became popular for its narcocorridos—songs that narrate the stories of Mexico’s criminal cartels. The group has millions of monthly listeners on Spotify. Despite repeated accusations linking the band to organized crime, the members always denied these claims, although they admitted that criminal groups had asked them to write songs on their behalf.

Some of Enigma Norteño’s tracks specifically referenced cartel figures, such as Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and members of the Sinaloa Cartel, including Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Barajas had often said in interviews that he tried to be careful with his lyrics so as not to offend rival groups. However, in 2023, he was forced to cancel a performance in Baja California after a threat from the CJNG, warning him not to perform for the Sinaloa Cartel in their territory.
Barajas also hosted a podcast where he interviewed other artists and discussed music, entertainment, and culture. He had been a visible figure both in the music world and on social media, where his team posted tributes following his death, expressing deep admiration and grief for the artist and human being he was.
The murder of Ernesto Barajas highlights the ongoing dangers faced by musicians who operate in the narcocorrido scene. While his songs told the stories of cartel leaders and their conflicts, it’s clear that the risks extended far beyond the music itself. Investigators in Jalisco are now working to identify those responsible, but the incident has left fans and the music community in shock, mourning the loss of a talented and controversial figure who was known for his voice, his artistry, and the complex world he navigated through his music.
The story serves as a stark reminder of how intertwined entertainment, politics, and organized crime can become in certain regions of Mexico, where even fame does not provide protection from violence.
