Miguel Amaya Injured Again After Just One Game Back

It was one of those moments in baseball that makes a whole stadium go quiet. Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya, who had only just returned from the injured list the day before, found himself heading right back to it after a freak play against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the top of the eighth inning, Amaya hustled down the line to beat out an infield single. But as his left foot hit the very front edge of first base, it landed awkwardly. His body twisted midair, and he came crashing down onto his back in visible pain.

Almost immediately, it was clear something was wrong. Cubs trainers rushed out to check on him, and the crowd at Rogers Centre watched in silence. Amaya stayed down, holding his leg, as the medical staff examined him. Moments later, he was carefully helped onto a cart and driven off the field, a towel covering his face. The diagnosis came quickly — a sprained left ankle. X-rays showed no fracture, which manager Craig Counsell called “great news,” but the swelling was already bad enough to confirm that another stint on the injured list was unavoidable.

The injury hit even harder because of the timing. Amaya had been activated from the 60-day IL just the day before, having missed months with a left oblique strain suffered in April. He’d only managed 27 games this season before that, hitting an impressive .280 with four home runs and 25 RBIs. For both the team and the player, Wednesday was supposed to mark a fresh start. Instead, it turned into another setback.

Counsell summed it up simply as “a weird baseball play” and “bad luck,” but the disappointment was obvious. Third baseman Matt Shaw admitted the sight of Amaya going down was tough for everyone, saying it was hard to process in the middle of what should have been a celebratory 4-1 win. “We’ve seen everything Miggy’s done to get back here,” Shaw said. “He’s an unbelievable guy, a huge part of this team. To see him carted off like that, it was really hard and we feel for him a lot.”

Rookie pitcher Cade Horton also spoke about the moment, offering prayers for Amaya and calling him “a special player” and “a great teammate.” With Amaya now sidelined again, the Cubs will lean on Reese McGuire and Carson Kelly behind the plate. But for the team, this is more than just losing a catcher — it’s losing the energy, effort, and leadership Amaya brings every game.

For now, the hope will be for a smooth recovery. But after working so hard to return, seeing Amaya injured again so soon is a reminder of just how quickly things can change in baseball — and how cruel the game can sometimes be.
