In Mirepoix, two very different but equally magical celebrations have brought people together this August. First came the third edition of the Nuit des étoiles , where the night sky itself became the stage. Organized by the Astronome toy library of the Communauté de Communes du Pays de Mirepoix, the event welcomed over 70 curious stargazers. The expertise of the Explorarium of Carcassonne guided everyone through a cosmic journey. The sky delivered a spectacular show — a gentle rain of shooting stars, the Milky Way stretching overhead, and a stunning view of the Pyrenees under the dark velvet sky. The Moon rose slowly, revealing its cratered surface in striking detail. Telescopes were available so participants could see every ridge and shadow, illuminated by the sun’s grazing light. To end the evening, the Roumengoux town hall offered refreshments, ensuring the night was as warm in spirit as it was beautiful to behold. It was a reminder of how powerful and unifying the simple act of looking up can be.

And now, the focus shifts from the heavens to the arts, as Mirepoix prepares for the fifth edition of the Castel Artès festival, running from August 15 to 22. This is no small affair — it’s a meeting point for world-class musicians, promising young talents, and lovers of dance and opera. The opening day will be packed: at 4 p.m., Les Voix de Demain will perform alongside renowned pianists Yves Marat, Akiko Koizumi, and Pierre Rakotoharisoa. At 6 p.m., the art exhibition Matière à danser will be unveiled, where Joëlle Sarlin’s sculptures seem to sway mid-step, Patrick Sant’s vibrant metalworks ripple with movement, and Gu Jiajun’s precise drawings capture dancers in moments of pure grace. Then, at 9 p.m., violinist Nathan Mierdl and pianist Tanguy de Williencourt will fill the park of the Ch'steau de Terride with the music of Ravel, Fauré, and Beethoven.

The rest of the week will bring a kaleidoscope of experiences — baroque motets, masterclasses, opera, chamber music, children’s shows, and sacred concerts. Highlights include Berlioz and Tchaikovsky performed by the Orchestre du Printemps, the Quatuor Magenta interpreting Debussy and Schumann, and the grand finale: Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte under the summer night sky.

Mirepoix has, in just a few days, celebrated the poetry of both the universe above and the artistry of human creativity. One event invited eyes skyward to marvel at infinite space; the other will invite ears and hearts to savor music, dance, and drama in intimate, earthly beauty. Both remind us that wonder can be found whether we look up to the stars or into the soul of art.
