Mount Waverley Double Murder Case Shocks Melbourne
On Monday night, a quiet street in Mount Waverley became the centre of a tragic and unsettling crime scene. Police were called to a unit on Adrienne Crescent just before 10pm after neighbours reported hearing yelling and signs of a disturbance. When officers arrived, they discovered the bodies of 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos, who was four months pregnant, and her partner, 50-year-old Andrew Gunn.
The accused, 34-year-old Ross Judd, was later arrested several kilometres away at Westall railway station, reportedly accompanied by two large dogs. He has since been charged with two counts of murder and made his first appearance at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Wearing a black T-shirt, Judd entered the courtroom under the watch of security officers, at one point smiling and even winking at people in attendance.

The prosecution told the court that the case was complex. Investigators will need more than two months to examine significant DNA evidence, review CCTV footage, and process forensic items. Autopsies have also been delayed due to the pregnancy of one of the victims, adding further time to the investigation. No bail application was made, and Judd was remanded in custody until January next year, when he will appear via video link for a committal case conference.
Friends and loved ones of the victims have been left heartbroken. Elisha Brown, a friend of the couple, described Athena as “happy-go-lucky” and always full of laughter, noting how excited she and Andrew were to welcome their baby. Athena’s mother, Petty Georgopoulos, posted an emotional tribute on social media, expressing disbelief and grief over losing her daughter and unborn grandchild in one night. Messages of condolence, many in Greek, have poured in, offering love, strength, and prayers for the grieving family.
The crime scene itself was described by police as traumatic, with counselling offered to both officers and residents. The front of the unit was covered in graffiti bearing words such as “karma,” “betrayal,” and “enough is enough.” Detectives are investigating whether these markings are connected to the killings, but they believe Judd and Gunn knew each other.
Neighbours have spoken of their shock, saying such violence was unimaginable in their normally quiet street. For much of Tuesday, the area remained cordoned off while homicide detectives and forensic teams worked through the scene. This tragedy has not only left a family shattered but has also sent ripples of fear and sadness through the local community.
Now, with the accused in custody and an investigation underway, many are left waiting for answers—and hoping that justice will be served in a case that has already taken so much.
