Mumbai and North India Brace for Torrential Monsoon Rains
Hey everyone, here’s the latest on the monsoon situation across India. Mumbai and its surrounding areas have been hit hard by heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past day, and authorities have issued a red alert for the city and neighbouring districts. Roads have been severely waterlogged, public transport has been disrupted, and flights have faced delays. Citizens have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, and schools and offices have been asked to adjust timings, with early departures being encouraged.
In Mumbai alone, some areas recorded over 177 millimeters of rainfall within just a few hours, and the situation has caused significant disruption to daily life. Residents have been warned that heavy showers could continue today and tomorrow, particularly in the districts of Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, which are on red alert. Meanwhile, several other districts including Palghar, Sindhudurg, Aurangabad, and Nanded are under an orange alert, while the rest of Maharashtra sees yellow alerts.

The downpour has also triggered overflowing of reservoirs. Vihar Lake, one of Mumbai’s key water sources, began overflowing on Monday afternoon, marking the sixth out of seven major lakes to reach full capacity this monsoon. With water levels rising so rapidly, authorities are closely monitoring all catchment areas to prevent potential flooding.
The monsoon fury isn’t limited to Maharashtra. In Karnataka, rising water levels in the Krishna river and its tributaries have prompted warnings to farmers and fishermen in low-lying villages. Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Jammu and Kashmir have also reported heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides, leading to road closures, crop damage, and unfortunately, some casualties. In Himachal alone, over 380 roads were closed, and in Jammu, at least two people were washed away by torrents. Authorities have been conducting rescue operations and relocating people from flood-affected areas.
Even Delhi is not untouched. The Yamuna river has crossed its danger mark, and officials are closely monitoring floodplains to ensure that any inundation remains contained. Meanwhile, thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected across Haryana, with the IMD forecasting continued rainfall in the coming days.
