Newcastle’s £40m Wissa Bid Rejected as Isak Saga Intensifies

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window has taken another dramatic twist, with Brentford rejecting their latest offer for forward Yoane Wissa. An improved bid of £35 million, potentially rising to £40 million with add-ons, was submitted by the Magpies this week, but it still fell short of Brentford’s valuation. The west London club are believed to be holding out for between £50 and £60 million, even though Wissa is entering the final year of his contract.

This move comes at a tense moment for Newcastle, as the club continues to wrestle with the uncertain future of star striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish international has openly voiced his frustrations, claiming that “broken promises” were made to him by the club. He has trained separately from the main squad and has yet to feature in pre-season matches. While Newcastle insist Isak is not for sale, the situation has left fans and pundits wondering whether he might yet be tempted away, especially with Liverpool circling after already having a £110 million bid rejected earlier this summer.

For Brentford, the Wissa situation is equally complicated. The 28-year-old forward has made no secret of his desire to join Newcastle, even going as far as removing all Brentford-related content from his social media accounts. He missed the Bees’ opening weekend defeat to Nottingham Forest, with his absence directly linked to the ongoing transfer saga. While he did return to training, it is clear that his focus remains elsewhere, and reports suggest he has been expecting the club to sanction his move once a replacement was signed. Brentford have already brought in Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, which only fueled speculation that Wissa’s departure could soon be agreed.

But Brentford are under pressure too. This summer has already seen a huge exodus from the club—Bryan Mbeumo has moved to Manchester United, captain Christian Nørgaard has joined Arsenal, and former head coach Thomas Frank is now at Tottenham. Losing Wissa on top of those departures would be another significant blow, particularly after his standout season last year, where he scored 19 Premier League goals.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Wissa, however, is about more than just adding depth. The club lost veteran striker Callum Wilson to West Ham earlier in the window, leaving Eddie Howe’s squad light up front. Wissa is seen as a versatile attacker who could fill that gap, but if Newcastle were to add him and then receive another monster offer for Isak—potentially in the region of £130 million—they might be forced into a huge decision.

For now, the bid has been rejected, the player remains unsettled, and the saga shows no signs of cooling down. With the transfer deadline approaching, all eyes will be on whether Newcastle raise their offer, whether Brentford stand firm, and whether Alexander Isak’s future in black and white can be salvaged—or if it’s about to take another explosive turn.
