Nigeria and Senegal Set for Epic CHAN 2024 Showdown in Zanzibar
As fans gear up for one of the most anticipated matchups in the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship 2024, the tension and excitement are building around the clash between Nigeria and Senegal. It’s not just another group-stage match — this is a faceoff between two West African powerhouses with rich footballing histories, and all eyes will be on Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar as they go head-to-head.
Nigeria’s camp has been buzzing with energy, especially after recent successes in other sports that have lifted the country’s sporting spirit. Junior Nduka, one of the Super Eagles’ key figures, didn’t hide the pride and motivation that comes from being part of this national momentum. Speaking during a pre-match briefing, Nduka reflected on the recent victories by Nigeria’s women’s football and basketball teams, which have helped ignite belief across the nation. “We know expectations are high. Our ladies have been doing great, winning WAFCON and dominating basketball. So yes, we’re drawing strength from that, and we don’t want to let Nigerians down,” he said.

But while emotions and pride are running high, head coach Éric Chelle is keeping things grounded. He made it clear that the team is approaching the tournament one step at a time. When asked about other group opponents like Congo and Sudan, he waved off any distractions. “Right now, the focus is Senegal. We take each game as it comes. Let’s deal with Senegal first,” Chelle stated firmly.
Senegal, meanwhile, aren’t showing signs of pressure either — even as defending champions. Their head coach, Souleymane Diallo, remains calm and composed. When reminded of their 2022 CHAN title win, he shrugged it off in a way that sounded more like confidence than arrogance. According to him, the previous victory is a motivator, not a burden. “We’re not here to defend a title. We’re here to try and win another one. That’s our goal,” Diallo said.
He also stressed the importance of respecting all teams in the group. “There are no favorites in African football anymore. Every team earned their place. Nigeria, Congo, Sudan — we respect them all.”
Statistically, this match is shaping up to be a classic clash of styles. Senegal’s defense has been almost impenetrable recently, keeping ten clean sheets in their last fourteen CHAN games. Nigeria, on the other hand, have found the net in eleven of their last fifteen outings. It’s going to be a battle of strength versus firepower — and whoever blinks first may be punished.
Kickoff is set for 6pm Nigerian time. Whether it ends in triumph or lesson, one thing’s for sure: this match will be one for the books.
