Rashford vs. Nico Williams? Ex-Barça President Sparks Debate

So, here's the latest in football drama, and it’s stirred quite a bit of debate in Spain and beyond. Marcus Rashford, the England forward we all know from Manchester United, has officially joined Barcelona on a season-long loan—and he’s already making headlines, not just for his move, but for who he’s being compared to.

Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart didn’t hold back when asked about the transfer. In fact, he flat out said Marcus Rashford is better than Nico Williams . Yep, he made that bold claim after Rashford joined Barça, and the club failed to land Williams from Athletic Club Bilbao. Originally, Barça were chasing other names too—Luis Diaz from Liverpool was on their radar, but Liverpool made it clear he wasn’t for sale. Then they were close to signing Nico Williams, only for the deal to collapse at the last minute due to disagreements over release clauses and La Liga’s strict registration rules.

As a result, Nico ended up signing a ten-year extension with Bilbao, keeping him there until 2035. And that’s when things got spicy. Rashford was brought in instead, and while some fans saw him as a backup option, Gaspart definitely didn’t. He went on record saying Rashford was the better player and even dismissed any criticism from Nico’s older brother, Inaki Williams, who was not happy with how Barcelona handled the transfer.

Inaki accused Barça of launching a media campaign to pressure Nico into leaving Bilbao. He said a lot of the stories that circulated were simply untrue and suggested the club tried to manipulate the situation to their advantage. But despite all that noise, Nico stayed put—and Inaki says it was because of family, roots, and loyalty, not money or silverware.

Meanwhile, Rashford is settling into life in Spain. He made his unofficial debut in a friendly against Vissel Kobe, but only played for about half an hour before being subbed off. That raised a few eyebrows, but manager Hansi Flick quickly clarified it was just a precaution. Rashford had come off an injury and was behind the rest of the squad in training, so the plan was always to ease him in gradually.

So now, all eyes are on Rashford this season. He’s got a point to prove, both to Manchester United and to those who think Nico Williams was the one that got away. And whether Gaspart's claim turns out to be true—that Rashford is the better player—only time on the pitch will tell.
