Country music legend Reba McEntire is mourning the loss of someone she’s long called “her son,” even though the relationship began through marriage. Brandon Blackstock, her former stepson, passed away at the age of 48 after a private, three-year battle with cancer.

Reba, now 70, was married to Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 to 2015, and they share a son, Shelby. From the start, she treated Narvel’s children from his previous marriage—Brandon, Chassidy, and Shawna—as if they were her own. In a 2021 interview, she said, “Brandon’s been my son forever, it seems. Although he’s my stepson, I still love him like he’s my blood.” Her love and pride for all the children in the family was something she made public more than once over the years.

Brandon’s life intertwined deeply with the music world. He married singer Kelly Clarkson in 2013, later becoming her manager. They had two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander, before divorcing in 2022 after a difficult, public split. Through it all, Reba supported both sides, describing her affection for them equally and wishing happiness for them both.

In recent months, family moments were still being made. Back in March, photos captured Brandon at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, enjoying the day with Reba, Shelby, and other family members. He was smiling in his cowboy hat, surrounded by his children—Savannah, Seth, River, and Remington—and extended family. Those memories, now bittersweet, are among the last public glimpses of him.

His death was confirmed by his family in a heartfelt statement, sharing that he had fought his illness with bravery and passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Shelby, his half-brother, later posted a moving tribute, calling Brandon “funny, bright, and full of life” and speaking of the lessons and memories he would carry forever. He even added a bit of humor that Brandon would appreciate—teasing that he’d now have to watch Shelby “do it all a little better and look far more handsome” than Brandon ever could.

Reba has not yet spoken publicly about the loss, but her past words make clear how deeply she felt about Brandon. This is not just the passing of a family member by marriage—it’s the loss of someone she fully embraced as her own child. The love she expressed over the decades, the photos filled with laughter, and the way she constantly referred to him as “family” all show that Brandon’s place in her heart was permanent.

Now, as the family grieves, they hold on to those cherished moments—rodeos, concerts, everyday laughter—and the knowledge that Brandon’s warmth and spirit will remain a part of them forever.
