Seychelles President Strengthens Ties with Vatican Leaders
In recent days, a significant moment unfolded for Seychelles on the global stage as President Wavel Ramkalawan paid an official visit to Vatican City. The visit was marked by cordial discussions, high-level meetings, and reflections on the enduring relationship between Seychelles and the Holy See.
President Ramkalawan was warmly received by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, in what was described as a deeply respectful and encouraging audience. During the meeting, the President conveyed the greetings and best wishes of the Seychellois people and also extended condolences on the passing of the late Pope Francis earlier this year. He recalled with gratitude his personal audience with Pope Francis in 2024, a moment that had left a lasting impression on him and the nation. This encounter with Pope Leo XIV marked his second papal audience and was seen as an important continuation of Seychelles’ engagement with the Vatican.
In his remarks, President Ramkalawan congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his recent election to the papacy, emphasizing that his leadership comes at a time when the world is facing profound challenges that demand compassion, unity, and shared commitment to human dignity. He assured the Holy Father that Seychelles remains ready to work closely with the Church in addressing global issues as well as advancing social and moral development at home.

The President also held a courtesy meeting with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See. Their discussions touched on a wide range of themes, including education, youth empowerment, community initiatives, and pastoral outreach. Attention was also given to issues such as environmental conservation, climate change, family values, and the nurturing of the next generation of priests. Both sides agreed to build on existing cooperation and to translate shared priorities into practical outcomes that benefit society at large.
The depth of the historical bond between Seychelles and the Catholic Church was highlighted. This relationship, which dates back to the mid-19th century with the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Seychelles, has grown into an enduring presence in the islands. Catholicism continues to play a central role in the cultural and spiritual life of the Seychellois people, shaping values of community, faith, and resilience.
President Ramkalawan also extended an official invitation to Pope Leo XIV to undertake a pastoral visit to Seychelles, a gesture that underscored the closeness of the relationship and the hope for an even stronger future of collaboration.
Accompanying the President on this visit were First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, Principal Minister Jean-François Ferrari, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Sylvestre Radegonde, and Ambassador Beryl Samson. The delegation also visited important religious sites, including the Sistine Chapel, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
This visit was more than a diplomatic courtesy—it was a reaffirmation of faith, a strengthening of ties, and a commitment to joint efforts in promoting peace, social progress, and spiritual values in Seychelles and beyond.
