Shaun Alexander Backs Sam Darnold for Even Bigger Year in Seattle

Sam Darnold just had the best season of his NFL career, and according to Seahawks legend Shaun Alexander, he might not be done yet. After throwing for over 4,300 yards and 35 touchdowns while leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 14–3 record in 2024, Darnold made a bold move in free agency—he signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, Alexander believes Darnold’s next chapter could be even better.

Speaking after an event with USAA’s “Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp,” Alexander praised the fit between Darnold and Seattle’s new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak. The two have worked together before, back in 2023 with the San Francisco 49ers, when Darnold served as a backup and Kubiak was pass game coordinator. Alexander noted that the system being installed in Seattle “looks right for him” and that practices have looked sharp.

Seattle’s offense will look very different this year. Star wideout DK Metcalf was traded to the Steelers, but in came Cooper Kupp, and second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is expected to take on a bigger role. In the backfield, the Seahawks have a dangerous one-two punch in Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet, a duo Alexander called “a good one when both are healthy.” He even went so far as to joke about a perfect season, saying “I’m still thinking Seahawks 17–0,” before settling on a more realistic prediction of 11–6 and a playoff berth.

Alexander emphasized that home-field advantage will be huge, especially with the notoriously loud “12s” behind them. He also pointed out that Seattle’s secondary is “wonderful” and that if the defensive line starts making plays consistently, the Seahawks will be tough to beat.

The season opener won’t be easy—Seattle faces Darnold’s former team, the 49ers, at home on September 7. But the quarterback seems ready. He’s already praised the team’s chemistry, the energy at Lumen Field, and the way the new offensive scheme is tailored to his strengths.

While football was the main topic, Alexander also reflected on his deep respect for the military, inspired by his brother’s 22 years of service. At the USAA event, he shared moments with service members, called them heroes, and encouraged them to keep pushing through challenges just as athletes do on the field.

For Darnold, the move to Seattle is a fresh opportunity. For Alexander, it’s a chance to watch a quarterback thrive in the right system. And for Seahawks fans, it might just be the start of something special—one where last year’s career-best season for Darnold turns out to be only the beginning.
