Shedeur Sanders Shines in Browns’ Preseason Debut Against Panthers
It was a big night in Charlotte for rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and the Cleveland Browns made sure he got plenty of time to show what he could do. Head coach Kevin Stefanski had already made it clear — Sanders would be taking most of the snaps against the Carolina Panthers, somewhere around 50 plays’ worth. That’s essentially the bulk of an entire game for a quarterback in the preseason, and it signaled the team’s commitment to giving him a real shot at proving himself.
With starters resting after joint practices earlier in the week, Sanders stepped in surrounded by the guys he’s been working with all offseason — rookie wideouts Gage Larvadain and Luke Floriea, along with second-team options like Diontae Johnson, Kaden Davis, and DeAndre Carter. Injuries to Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel had opened this door, and Sanders was determined to walk right through it.

And walk through it he did. By the time his night was done, Sanders had completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He even showed off some mobility, tacking on 19 rushing yards on four carries. For a fifth-round pick making his NFL preseason debut, it was about as promising as it gets. He looked composed in the pocket, decisive with his reads, and accurate when it mattered most. The Browns’ sideline — and more than a few fans — took notice.
Tyler Huntley, who had just re-signed with the Browns, relieved Sanders late in the game. Veteran Joe Flacco was also on hand as part of the current quarterback rotation, though for now it’s Sanders who has the momentum. The plan had originally been for Gabriel to start and Sanders to take the second half, but that hamstring injury changed everything. Opportunity knocked, and Sanders answered.
The game itself may have been just a preseason opener, but the atmosphere carried a little extra buzz. Not only was it Sanders’ first appearance in an NFL game, but there was the added intrigue of his father, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, likely keeping a close eye on every throw. After the game, social media lit up with praise — from fans, from media, and even from some high-profile names in sports.
Kickoff had been set for 7 p.m. ET, broadcast nationally on NFL Network, but for Browns fans it felt more like the beginning of a new chapter. Yes, it’s early. Yes, it’s preseason. But performances like this don’t just disappear into the box score — they get remembered, they get talked about, and sometimes, they spark something bigger. For Shedeur Sanders, Friday night might have been just the start.
