Son Shines in Possible Farewell as Spurs Face Newcastle in Seoul
So today, Tottenham Hotspur took on Newcastle United in Seoul for a pre-season friendly, and all eyes were on Heung-min Son — and for good reason. This match might have been his final appearance for Spurs, and it happened right in his home country of South Korea. You could really feel the emotional weight of the moment, as fans packed the Seoul World Cup Stadium, hoping to see their national hero one last time in Spurs colors.
Tottenham’s manager Thomas Frank made quite a few changes to the squad that recently beat Arsenal 1–0 in Hong Kong. In total, seven adjustments were made to the starting lineup. At the back, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies were brought in for Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence. In midfield, young Archie Gray took the place of Lucas Bergvall. Then up front, it was almost a complete reshuffle: Brennan Johnson, Mathys Tel, and Son replaced Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert, and Richarlison.

Son was not just starting — he was also handed the captain’s armband, which added an extra layer of significance. It’s being reported that he’s looking to leave the club, with LAFC from Major League Soccer currently leading the chase to sign him. After leading Spurs to Europa League glory last season — their first major trophy in 17 years — it seems like this could be the end of an era for both the player and the club.
Son’s role in this pre-season tour has been fairly limited up until now, with only one brief appearance so far. So fans were especially eager to see him in action today. And while it's a friendly match, the energy around the stadium made it feel a lot more meaningful — like a farewell celebration wrapped in a football match.
Also worth noting: Pape Matar Sarr kept his place in the midfield, after that stunning goal from the halfway line against Arsenal. And while Brennan Johnson looked sharp up front, Spurs were still missing a few key players. Dominic Solanke wasn’t included due to injury, which might be a concern with the new Premier League season just around the corner. Destiny Udogie, Dragusin, and Kulusevski were also among those sidelined.
The confirmed Spurs starting eleven was: Kinsky in goal; Porro, Danso, Romero, and Davies at the back; Bentancur, Gray, and Sarr in midfield; with Johnson, Tel, and Son leading the line.
Whatever the final score may be, today’s match will be remembered more for the emotion than the result. If this really is Son’s last game for Tottenham, it couldn’t have happened in a more meaningful place.
