Spurs stun Man City with 2-0 win at the Etihad
What a weekend it has been in the Premier League, and the spotlight was firmly on Manchester City against Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad. This fixture has always carried drama, but this time, it was defined by a shocking goalkeeping blunder that stunned City fans and gave Spurs a famous 2-0 victory.
Tottenham have built something of a reputation for spoiling City’s home comfort, and once again, they delivered. Brennan Johnson struck first in the 35th minute, punishing a lapse in defending from young fullback Rico Lewis. Johnson latched onto a pass from Richarlison and buried his shot high into the net. At first, the offside flag went up, but VAR confirmed the goal, leaving City behind and the visiting fans bouncing.

If that was a warning sign, the second goal was an outright calamity. Deep into first-half stoppage time, City’s 22-year-old keeper James Trafford – given the nod again while Ederson sat on the bench amid transfer speculation – tried to play out from the back. The pass was misplaced, nerves rippled through the crowd, and Spurs were ruthless. Richarlison pounced, rolled the ball to João Palhinha, and the new signing’s shot, deflected along the way, found the back of the net. For Trafford, it was a nightmare moment, one that may linger for weeks.
Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, couldn’t hide his joy after the match, saying he felt the project at Spurs was too exciting to turn down. And his early contribution has already given fans plenty of reasons to celebrate. For Spurs, it was also a continuation of their unbeaten start under Thomas Frank, who only a year ago was masterminding Brentford victories against City.
As for City, this result was a jolt. After a strong 4-0 opening-day win against Wolves, they were expected to roll forward with momentum. But instead, they looked disjointed, missed simple passes, and couldn’t find their usual rhythm. Erling Haaland had chances, Marmoush forced saves, but the finishing touch never came. By the time the final whistle blew, home supporters were streaming out early, while the traveling Spurs fans chanted gleefully: “It’s happened again.”
Pep Guardiola defended his choice to start Trafford, insisting the young keeper deserved his place after a good debut, and downplayed the defeat as part of the early-season adjustment. Still, the error will not be forgotten easily, especially with Ederson’s future still uncertain.
For Spurs, the victory was another statement. To win three of their last five league games at the Etihad is no small feat, and it adds fuel to the idea that they are a real force under Frank’s leadership. Two clean sheets, five goals scored, and growing confidence – Tottenham are off and running, while City have been reminded that nothing comes easy in this league.
