Stormy Start to the Week in Houston, Then Heat Takes Over

Hey everyone, just a quick weather update for those of us in the Houston area — and yeah, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a messy start to the week. Monday is kicking off with some pretty active weather across Southeast Texas, so if you’re heading out, you’ll want to stay alert and maybe pack that umbrella.

So here’s what’s going on: scattered afternoon thunderstorms are moving into the region today, and they're packing a bit of a punch. Wind gusts around 60 miles per hour have been reported in some areas, and there’s plenty of heavy rain and lightning to go around. If you’ve been watching the radar, it’s lit up with activity — especially heading into early afternoon. The commute later today could get a little rough, so definitely give yourself extra time and maybe avoid flooded roadways if the rain gets intense.

Now, all of this is being stirred up by a combination of warm air, high humidity, and a jetstream that’s currently dipping from north to south across our area. That jetstream can sometimes amplify storm strength, though models are a bit mixed on just how severe things might get. That said, it’s always safer to stay weather-aware. If you haven’t already, it’s a good time to download the FOX 26 or KPRC Storm Tracker 2 weather apps — they’ll give you alerts in real time and help you navigate through the day.

Looking ahead, once we get past this initial round of storms, things are going to heat up quickly. Starting Tuesday, we’re expecting a return to much sunnier skies — but also hotter temperatures. Highs are forecast to climb well into the upper 90s throughout the rest of the week, and while there’s still a slight chance of some isolated late-day storms, it’s going to feel a lot more like typical Texas summer weather.

And on the tropical front — yes, things are starting to wake up out in the Atlantic. A system called Invest 95L off the East Coast is being closely monitored and might turn into a named storm in the next day or two. There’s also another wave developing further out. The good news for us? Right now, none of these systems are expected to pose a threat to the Texas coastline. But as always during hurricane season, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on things.

So, bottom line: today is wet and stormy, tomorrow starts the heatwave, and the tropics are getting more active — but we’re in the clear for now. Stay safe, stay cool, and keep an eye on the skies!
