Terique Owens Follows in Father’s Footsteps with First NFL Touchdown
It was a moment that carried more than just points on the scoreboard — it carried history, legacy, and a little bit of nostalgia for San Francisco 49ers fans. Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, finally had his breakthrough moment in the NFL preseason, and it could not have been scripted better.
Just one week after recording his very first NFL reception in a preseason matchup against the Raiders, Terique added another milestone to his journey. In the 49ers’ preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi’s Stadium, Owens pulled down his first professional touchdown. With just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter, he was on the receiving end of a 22-yard strike from quarterback Carter Bradley, pushing San Francisco’s lead and giving fans something extra to cheer about in an otherwise routine preseason game.

Now, for most rookies or practice squad players, a preseason touchdown might not draw much attention. But for Terique, it carried a weight of expectation and memory. His father, Terrell Owens, is one of the most recognizable figures in 49ers history — a man who racked up over 8,500 receiving yards, 81 touchdowns, and countless highlight-reel plays during his years in San Francisco. So when fans at Levi’s Stadium saw the younger Owens cross the goal line, it felt like a familiar story being retold in a new generation.
Terique’s path, however, has been far from easy. He wasn’t drafted in 2024 and instead signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent. His first season was spent mostly on the practice squad after an injury sidelined him before the year began. San Francisco kept him around, though, largely due to the team’s fluctuating receiver situation — with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from a knee injury, Ricky Pearsall battling a hamstring issue, and veteran Demarcus Robinson facing possible suspension. That left opportunities for young players like Owens to step in and prove themselves.
Owens’ journey to the NFL wasn’t straightforward either. Before making it to the pros, he played six years of college football across multiple schools, including Contra Costa Community College, Florida Atlantic, and Missouri State. It’s been a grind, but Saturday night’s touchdown showed that persistence is paying off.
Does this mean Terique has locked in a spot on the 49ers’ final roster? Not quite. He is still very much on the bubble, and chances are he may spend another season on the practice squad. But what’s undeniable is the progress. From undrafted free agent to injured reserve, from practice squad to preseason highlight — every step marks growth.
And while it’s unfair to compare him to his legendary father, the younger Owens gave fans a glimpse of something special: the possibility that another Owens might one day leave his own mark in a 49ers uniform. For now, the touchdown will be remembered as one of those small but meaningful preseason moments — a sign that the story of the Owens family in San Francisco might not be finished just yet.
