Trump Threatens Chris Christie and ABC News After Critical Interview
Over the weekend, political tensions flared again when former President Donald Trump lashed out at both former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and ABC News. The controversy began after Christie appeared on ABC’s This Week and delivered a pointed critique of Trump’s leadership. Christie accused Trump of disregarding the separation of powers in government, particularly in relation to ongoing investigations, saying the former president believes he should control every decision without limits.
That interview did not sit well with Trump. Just hours later, he took to his social media platform to fire back. He mocked Christie, labeling him “Sloppy Chris,” and revived an old political scandal known as “Bridgegate.” That scandal involved intentional traffic jams on the George Washington Bridge in 2013, allegedly created by Christie’s aides to punish a Democratic mayor. While Christie was never charged and has always denied involvement, Trump suggested the matter should be reopened, even hinting that justice had not been fully served.

Trump’s response didn’t stop there. He also attacked Jonathan Karl, the host of This Week , mocking his appearance and criticizing the program’s ratings. On top of that, Trump claimed that ABC News had been forced to pay him $16 million to settle a defamation case last year—a statement he made while ridiculing the network’s credibility.
By Monday, reporters asked Trump if he actually intended to push for a new investigation into Christie. He deflected, saying it wasn’t up to him, but pointedly added that Christie had “gotten away with murder.” He suggested the Justice Department could reopen the case if it wanted to, leaving the door open to what sounded like a political threat.
The feud highlights the rocky history between the two men. Christie was once a close ally of Trump, endorsing him in 2016 and advising him during his presidency. But after Trump’s loss in 2020 and his attempts to overturn the election, Christie distanced himself and became one of Trump’s sharpest Republican critics—even challenging him in the 2024 GOP primary.
Trump’s anger wasn’t just directed at Christie. He also took aim at the media itself. On Sunday, he blasted both ABC and NBC, accusing them of extreme bias and calling them “an arm of the Democrat Party.” He went as far as suggesting that their broadcasting licenses should be revoked by the FCC, calling the networks a “threat to democracy.” A few hours later, he escalated again, saying that at the very least, the networks should pay heavily for the privilege of broadcasting on public airwaves.
These remarks arrive amid fresh concerns that Trump is willing to use government power to go after his political enemies and critics in the press. ABC and NBC have declined comment so far, while the FCC under Trump ally Brendan Carr has reopened investigations into alleged media bias.
In short, what began as a sharp interview on Sunday quickly snowballed into another battle between Trump, the press, and one of his former allies—reminding everyone how personal and political conflicts often collide when Trump is involved.
