US Open 2025 Serves Up Blockbuster Day One
The U.S. Open is back, and this year’s tournament at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center feels bigger than ever. For 2025, organizers have introduced a Sunday start, which means the first round will stretch across three full days. That shift not only gives fans more matches to enjoy but also spreads out the drama, and the opening day already has a star-studded lineup.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, and former U.S. Open sensation Emma Raducanu are all stepping onto court today, setting the tone for what promises to be an electric fortnight in New York.
On Arthur Ashe Stadium, play kicks off with American No. 6 seed Ben Shelton, who recently captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto. Shelton faces qualifier Ignacio Buse of Peru. For Buse, this is a daunting main-draw debut, but he comes with momentum from a strong run in Cancun. Shelton, though, is looking to prove he can translate his recent rise into a deep Grand Slam push.
Later, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka faces Rebeka Masarova. Sabalenka has been dominant this year, with 50 wins in 60 matches, but cracks in her serve have forced her into more tiebreaks than she’d like. Masarova once stretched her to a breaker in Berlin, but Sabalenka is expected to find her way through as she begins her title defense.

Then comes one of the most fascinating openers: Novak Djokovic, now 38, against 19-year-old American Learner Tien. Tien has already beaten several top-10 players this season with his blend of power and finesse, but Djokovic thrives against young challengers. Having not played since Wimbledon, Djokovic will need to find rhythm fast, but he remains the man to beat when the stakes are high.
Jessica Pegula, last year’s U.S. Open finalist, also returns to Arthur Ashe, meeting Egypt’s Mayar Sherif. Pegula admitted she isn’t at her most confident right now, but with so many points to defend, she’ll be eager to steady herself quickly.
On Louis Armstrong Stadium, Emma Raducanu takes the spotlight. Since her fairy-tale win in 2021, she hasn’t won another match at the U.S. Open, but a new coaching setup and recent good form suggest she might finally turn the corner. She faces qualifier Ena Shibahara, more known for doubles, which should favor Raducanu.
Taylor Fritz, America’s top male hope, also begins his campaign against fellow countryman Emilio Nava, while Jasmine Paolini, Daniil Medvedev, and several rising stars look to stamp their authority on day one.
Across the grounds, matches featuring Leylah Fernandez, Alexandra Eala, Emma Navarro, and Brandon Nakashima highlight the depth of talent on show.
The U.S. Open is not just the season’s final Grand Slam — it’s also the stage where careers are launched, reputations are tested, and legacies are defended. With names like Sabalenka, Djokovic, Raducanu, and Shelton all in action right from the start, fans are already being treated to a blockbuster opening day. The road to glory in New York has begun, and it promises twists, upsets, and unforgettable moments.
