Virgin Media Outage Sparks Fury During Liverpool’s Season Opener
Liverpool fans were left absolutely fuming last night when Virgin Media suffered a massive technical glitch right in the middle of the Premier League season opener at Anfield. Viewers tuning in to watch Liverpool’s clash with Bournemouth were suddenly faced with heavily pixelated screens, freezing images, and broken coverage that made the match practically unwatchable. And to make matters worse, the outage hit at the exact moment Hugo Ekitike scored his debut goal for Liverpool, meaning thousands of paying customers completely missed it.
Reports of problems began flooding in around 8pm, with only a handful of complaints at first, but within half an hour, the numbers shot up dramatically. According to outage trackers, more than 80,000 customers were affected by the fault at its peak. Fans vented their frustration on social media, describing the service as “unacceptable” given the high monthly costs. One supporter complained that they were paying over £120 a month for Virgin Media, only to be left staring at a frozen screen during the most anticipated fixture of the summer. Another joked that it felt like watching football on a “dodgy stick” rather than a premium sports channel.

The disruption lasted for more than 15 minutes, forcing many viewers to reboot their TV boxes and Wi-Fi routers in vain. For some, the issue extended beyond Sky Sports coverage, with other Virgin channels such as BBC and ITV also affected. Social media feeds quickly filled with angry posts, with fans demanding answers and compensation for missing key moments in the match.
Virgin Media acknowledged the fault shortly after complaints began stacking up. In replies to customers on X (formerly Twitter), the company confirmed that a widespread problem was affecting TV services, particularly Sky Sports. A spokesperson later issued an apology, stating that their teams had worked “swiftly to identify the fault” and that normal service had since been restored. However, by the time the fix was made, fans had already missed not just Ekitike’s opener but also Cody Gakpo’s stunning solo goal early in the second half.
For Virgin Media, this is not the first time such an outage has occurred. The company, which serves more than 3.2 million broadband, mobile, and TV customers across the UK, has faced similar complaints in the past about sudden service disruptions. While broadband and landline faults often come with automatic compensation, TV outages are not covered under the same rules, leaving frustrated football fans unsure if they’ll get anything back for the disappointment.
What makes the timing of this outage sting even more is that it happened during the curtain-raiser to the Premier League season, when excitement and expectations were at their peak. Instead of enjoying a smooth start, many Liverpool supporters ended up staring at broken screens, forced to follow updates on social media instead of watching the live action.
Though Virgin Media insists the issue has now been resolved, the damage to customer trust may linger far longer than the glitch itself. For fans, missing those critical opening goals wasn’t just frustrating—it was a reminder that even the most expensive services can sometimes let them down at the worst possible moment.
