Why Trump-Putin Talks Are Unlikely to Quickly End the Ukraine War
So, there’s been a lot of buzz lately about the possibility of a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, and whether it might finally bring an end to the war in Ukraine. This conflict, which started back in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, has been dragging on with no clear signs of stopping. Russia continues its brutal offensive, especially in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine strikes back with drone attacks on Russian energy facilities. Despite all this, the Kremlin recently confirmed that Trump and Putin are planning to meet soon.
Trump has been pretty clear about his goal: he says he wants to “get this war over with.” In fact, he pushed for three rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine earlier this year, but those negotiations didn’t bring either side any closer to peace. Trump might hope that by taking direct control, he can finally broker a ceasefire. However, the gap between what Russia wants and what Ukraine is willing to accept is enormous. Russia’s demands, presented in a June memorandum, are extremely tough — they want Ukraine to recognize Russian sovereignty over several Ukrainian regions like Crimea and Donetsk, agree to demilitarization, neutrality, and even hold new elections under conditions favorable to Moscow.

A Russian political analyst pointed out that while Russia may give the appearance of being open to negotiation, their core position remains unchanged: they want Ukraine to surrender. And that’s why many experts doubt that even Trump’s direct talks with Putin will quickly lead to peace.
There’s also the question of why Putin would even agree to these talks now. One theory is that Russia might be trying to avoid new secondary sanctions that Trump has threatened to impose on Moscow’s trading partners. Engaging with Trump could also be an attempt to convince him that Russia’s demands are reasonable. Remember, Trump has had a somewhat friendly stance toward Putin in the past, often refusing to fully condemn him or his actions in Ukraine. Some Ukrainians worry this meeting might lead Trump to side with Putin’s demands, which could be very dangerous for Kyiv, especially if Ukraine is left out of the negotiations.
Kyiv is pushing to be involved in any ceasefire talks to make sure their interests are represented. Trump’s envoy has even suggested a trilateral meeting including Putin, Trump, and Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy. But so far, Putin has rejected this idea, saying conditions aren’t right for such a meeting yet.
At the end of the day, despite the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting, the deep mistrust and stark differences between Russia and Ukraine make it unclear whether this could change much on the ground. The conflict remains intense, the demands from Moscow are rigid, and the path to peace still looks very complicated. So while the talks might grab headlines, don’t expect a quick end to the war just yet.
