WNBA Game Halted as Sex Toy Thrown Near Sophie Cunningham

So, something pretty bizarre—and honestly, pretty concerning—went down during Tuesday night’s WNBA game between the Indiana Fever and the Los Angeles Sparks. Just before halftime, with about two minutes left in the second quarter, a sex toy was thrown from the stands and landed right near Indiana's Sophie Cunningham. Yeah, you heard that right.

Now, this isn’t just some weird one-off moment. Believe it or not, it’s the third time in just a couple of weeks that something like this has happened during a WNBA game. A similar green object was thrown onto the court in Atlanta during a Dream game, and then again in Chicago during a game against the Sky. In those earlier cases, fans were either arrested or removed, and league officials made it very clear that these kinds of stunts won’t be tolerated. Still, the trend seems to be continuing—and this latest one came with an extra twist of irony.

Why? Because earlier that same day , Sophie Cunningham had joked on her podcast about the possibility of being hit by one of these things. She even said her mom texted her a heads-up before the game, saying, “Watch out for flying dildos tonight.” Cunningham laughed about it at the time—but then, just hours later, it happened.

When the object hit the court near her, Sparks player Kelsey Plum kicked it off the floor, and Cunningham was seen laughing as she walked over to the Sparks bench. She even reposted her earlier social media message about the toys with the caption, “This did not age well.”

But while Cunningham was able to laugh it off in the moment, the WNBA isn’t taking this lightly. The league put out a statement saying that throwing anything onto the court is a serious safety risk—not just to players, but to fans and officials, too. And they’ve made the consequences clear: fans who throw objects will be immediately ejected, banned for at least a year, and possibly arrested and prosecuted.

One man has already been arrested and charged in Georgia after throwing a similar object at a previous game. He’s facing charges like disorderly conduct and criminal trespass, and his court case is still pending.

Look, sports are about excitement and energy—but throwing sex toys onto the court? That crosses a line. This kind of behavior not only disrupts the game, but also puts people at risk, and the WNBA is making it clear that there’s zero tolerance for it moving forward.
