Wrexham Close in on £8m Deal for Man City’s Callum Doyle
Wrexham are making headlines again, and this time it’s for another huge transfer move. Despite already splashing out £10 million on Nathan Broadhead earlier this summer, reports now suggest that the Dragons are closing in on an £8 million deal to sign Callum Doyle from Manchester City. For a club that not long ago was battling away in the lower leagues, this really underlines how ambitious Wrexham’s ownership under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has become.
Going into the transfer window, it was revealed that Wrexham had a £25 million budget to strengthen their squad. Broadhead was their first marquee signing, arriving from Ipswich Town, and now Doyle could be the next. Even though Wrexham have started their Championship campaign with two defeats, manager Phil Parkinson has been assembling a squad full of quality. The belief is that once this team gels, they could be a serious force in the division. And the addition of Doyle would only strengthen that argument.

So who exactly is Callum Doyle? He’s a 21-year-old defender from Manchester, a graduate of City’s academy, and he has already made quite a name for himself in the Championship. While he never broke into Pep Guardiola’s first team, Doyle has enjoyed loan spells across the Football League. His first taste of senior football came at Sunderland, where he helped them earn promotion from League One. He then spent time with Coventry City, reaching the play-off final, before heading to Leicester City and winning another promotion. Most recently, he played for Norwich City, making 40 league appearances and showing that he can handle the rigours of the second tier.
With over 100 Championship games under his belt already, Doyle is no stranger to this level, and at 21, he still has a lot of room to grow. He’s also experienced internationally, having represented England all the way through the youth levels, even scoring twice for the under-21s. But after four consecutive loan spells, a permanent move always looked likely this summer. Manchester City were never realistically going to provide a pathway to their first team, so Wrexham’s move comes at the perfect time for him to settle and build his career.
Interestingly, Wrexham weren’t the only club keen on signing him. Rangers in Scotland and Sheffield United in the Championship were also chasing his signature. But it’s understood that Wrexham’s location played a big role in his decision. The chance to stay in England and join a club with real momentum behind it seemed more appealing than heading north of the border.
If the deal goes through, Wrexham will have secured a young, proven Championship defender for a fee that reflects both his potential and his experience. For Doyle, this is the chance to finally have a permanent home and to play a key role in one of football’s most fascinating modern stories. And for Wrexham, it’s another statement signing that shows they’re serious about climbing even higher in the football pyramid.
