Xpeng X9 Hybrid Could Redefine Long-Distance Driving

The world of electric vehicles is moving quickly, but one of the biggest challenges has always been range anxiety. People worry about how far they can really travel before needing to stop for a charge. Now, Chinese automaker Xpeng might have come up with a game-changing solution. Their new model, the Xpeng X9 in its extended-range hybrid version, could offer a staggering driving distance of up to 1,400 kilometers—about 890 miles—on a single charge and refuel combined.

So, what makes this car different? The X9 isn’t just another plug-in hybrid or a fully electric vehicle. Instead, it’s what’s called an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids that allow the engine to take over directly, an EREV uses a small petrol engine mainly to recharge the battery when it’s running low. That means the car is still primarily driven by electricity, but the engine works quietly in the background as a safety net. With this approach, drivers could enjoy an electric-only range of about 430 kilometers, or 267 miles, and then count on the engine to extend the journey to nearly 900 miles in total.

This is a significant leap forward compared to what most EVs can do today. For instance, the fully electric version of the X9, which is already available, runs on a 105kWh battery and can deliver up to 740 kilometers, or 460 miles. Impressive, yes—but the hybrid variant with its range-extending engine pushes the limits even further, easing the constant concern of where the next charging station might be found.

The X9 itself is a luxury seven-seater MPV, designed with comfort and practicality in mind for larger families or long-distance travelers. The EREV version is expected to carry a battery pack of around 60kWh, alongside its supporting engine. That balance between a smaller but still powerful battery and a lightweight, low-powered generator could make it both efficient and versatile.

And Xpeng isn’t stopping with the X9. Just recently, the company also unveiled a new version of its P7 sedan, fitted with three in-house AI chips, dubbed the Turing chips. These power the car’s intelligent driving system and cockpit, creating a highly advanced user experience. Built on an 800V architecture, the P7 also boasts super-fast charging and a potential range of up to 820 kilometers, or about 510 miles.

Currently, Xpeng’s lineup in the UK only includes the G6 SUV, priced at just under £40,000, offering 354 miles of range. But with innovations like the X9 and the AI-powered P7, the company is quickly showing the world that it isn’t just about building electric cars—it’s about rethinking how we move altogether.

If the X9 EREV delivers as promised, the days of range anxiety could finally be behind us, and long road trips in electric vehicles might soon feel just as carefree as driving a traditional petrol car.
