49ers Face a Defining 2025 Season with Big Bets on Purdy and New Stars
The San Francisco 49ers are about to open their 2025 season, and the storylines surrounding this team could shape its future for years to come. After finishing 6–11 last year, the organization finds itself at a crossroads. The core group of players has been held together for a long time, but another disappointing season could lead to sweeping changes in both the coaching staff and the front office. On the offensive side, the absence of Deebo Samuel will be felt. Samuel is now with Washington, where he looks motivated again after a sluggish 2024. Instead of a punishing, run-through-you style, the 49ers will lean on finesse, which could limit their explosiveness in certain moments.
Special teams may also cause headaches. Jake Moody, the kicker drafted in the third round, has been inconsistent. In a season where San Francisco is likely to play many close games, those missed field goals could easily cost them wins. If Moody struggles early, the team may not hesitate to replace him before the midseason break.
The offensive MVP, however, is expected to be Brock Purdy. Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Trent Williams remain stars, but they are aging and could miss stretches with injuries. Purdy, now one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, will be asked to steady the ship. Entering his fourth season, he has enough weapons to spread the ball around and carry the team when others are unavailable. This is the year he must show that the franchise’s massive investment was justified.
As for the record, a 10–7 finish seems likely. The defense is young and may stumble early, and the offense will need time to adjust without Samuel. Still, the schedule is manageable, and if the team finds its rhythm by December, it could be dangerous down the stretch. Whether it’s Bosa’s resurgence, Purdy’s leadership, or a potential change at kicker, this season will be remembered as a defining chapter for the 49ers. Their future, and the legacies of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, now rest on how well this gamble plays out.
