Aldi confirms three-day Christmas store closures across the UK

Aldi has announced that every one of its UK stores will close for three days during the upcoming festive season. The decision has been confirmed well in advance so shoppers can prepare, but it also means millions of customers will need to plan their Christmas food shops a little more carefully.

According to the supermarket, all 1,050 stores across England, Scotland, and Wales will close on Christmas Day, December 25, and will remain shut on Boxing Day, December 26. Doors will reopen on Saturday, December 27. Stores will then trade as usual through to New Year’s Eve, before closing again on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026. Business will resume on Friday, January 2.

The closures follow the same pattern Aldi has used in recent years. Executives explained that the move was taken to allow staff the chance to rest and spend valuable time with their families. It was stressed that the break is a way of thanking employees for their hard work during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

Rebecca Heley, Aldi UK’s communications director, said that Christmas is a special time and that all colleagues deserve the chance to enjoy it with loved ones. She added that the company wanted to recognise the effort staff put in to deliver a great festive experience for customers, making the decision to close on Boxing Day an important gesture of appreciation.

To balance the closures, Aldi will extend opening hours in the days leading up to Christmas. This means shoppers will still have plenty of opportunity to stock up before the big day, but it will require a little extra planning. Customers have been advised to check their local store’s updated hours as they may vary by location.

Other major retailers have also shared their festive schedules. B&M will close on Christmas Day but reopen on Boxing Day, while Home Bargains has announced a three-day shutdown, closing from Christmas Eve at 5pm and reopening on December 27. John Lewis, Ikea, and other big names followed similar patterns in previous years, showing a growing trend among retailers to prioritise staff wellbeing over maximising Boxing Day sales.

For Aldi shoppers, the closures may mean adjusting the usual routine. Those used to picking up Boxing Day essentials will need to shop earlier, but the company believes customers will support the move once they see its purpose. As the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket, Aldi has built a reputation on affordability, convenience, and its much-loved “SpecialBuys” middle aisle, but this decision highlights another value it wants to be known for—putting people first.

So, as Christmas approaches, the message is clear: Aldi will be closing its doors for three days, giving staff a well-earned rest. Shoppers will still have plenty of chances to prepare, but a little forward planning will go a long way to keeping the festive season running smoothly.
