Ariana Grande, Ozzy Tribute & Mariah Carey Shine at MTV VMAs 2025
The MTV Video Music Awards 2025 turned into an unforgettable night packed with emotional tributes, powerhouse performances, and history-making wins. Held live at the brand-new USB Arena in New York, the show celebrated both iconic legends and fresh rising stars in music.
The evening was capped by Ariana Grande, who walked away with the most coveted prize of the night— Video of the Year —for her uplifting track “Brighter Days Ahead.” Her acceptance speech felt deeply personal, as she thanked fans for supporting her since her teenage years and opened up about how her latest album was inspired by healing from trauma. She reassured anyone going through difficult times that “brighter days” are truly ahead.
Another major highlight came when Mariah Carey received the long-awaited Video Vanguard Award . She dazzled the crowd with a medley of hits, from “Fantasy” to “We Belong Together.” In her speech, Carey poked fun at the delay in finally being recognized, joking, “What in the Sam hell were you waiting for?” before reflecting on her decades of iconic videos. For fans, it was a triumphant moment, especially since she also picked up her first-ever regular VMA earlier in the night for Best R&B with “Type Dangerous.”

Perhaps the most emotional moment was the tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne. A video montage of the heavy metal icon played before Yungblud stormed the stage to perform “Crazy Train.” Joined by guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and Aerosmith legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, the group powered through classics like “Changes” and “Mama, I’m Coming Home.” As the performance closed, Yungblud screamed, “Ozzy, forever man!” while the crowd roared in approval.
The winners list this year reflected both global icons and fresh voices. Lady Gaga took home Artist of the Year and delivered a pre-taped performance from her Madison Square Garden concert. Sabrina Carpenter won Best Album for “Short n’ Sweet,” while Rosé and Bruno Mars shared Song of the Year honors for their hit “APT.” Country and Latin music also had their shining moments, with Ricky Martin being honored as the first-ever Latin Icon Award recipient and Tate McRae snagging Song of Summer with “Just Keep Watching.” Rising artists had their spotlight too— Alex Warren earned Best New Artist and Sombr grabbed Best Alternative for “Back to Friends.”
The stage itself was never quiet. From Doja Cat’s high-energy opener to Sabrina Carpenter’s water-drenched performance of “Tears” and Conan Gray’s dramatic “Vodka Cranberry” showcase , the night was filled with unforgettable visuals. Even Post Malone and Jelly Roll performed remotely from Germany, proving that the VMAs truly reach across the globe.
By the end, the 2025 MTV VMAs had reminded viewers why it remains one of music’s biggest nights—mixing heartfelt moments, bold performances, and a celebration of legends and newcomers alike. And while trophies were handed out, it was the emotional speeches, tributes, and raw energy on stage that made this year’s show one to remember.
