Baltimore’s Bayview Golf Center Destroyed in Fire
A massive two-alarm fire tore through Baltimore’s well-known Bayview Golf Center this past Sunday evening, leaving the 25-year-old business in ruins and injuring one firefighter. The blaze erupted around 6:30 p.m. on East Lombard Street, not far from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and sent thick black smoke rising into the sky that could be seen for miles.
According to the facility’s manager, Robert Prettyman Jr., the first sign of trouble came in the form of a sweet chemical odor. At first, he thought it might have been caused by teenagers fooling around with aerosol cans out on the tee boxes, but the smell grew stronger and unusual sounds began to echo through the building. Those noises were traced back to five banks of backup solar panel batteries that had been installed several years ago without any issues until now.
Prettyman described hearing popping and hissing noises before one of the battery banks suddenly erupted into flames. He quickly grabbed fire extinguishers, making two attempts to smother the blaze, but each time the flames came back even larger and stronger. Within minutes, the fire spread to the wooden walls of the golf center, engulfing the structure in flames.

The Bayview Golf Center was more than just a driving range. It was a local gathering spot that featured five indoor golf simulator bays and a full bar, offering customers a place to practice their swings and unwind with friends. Many regulars considered it a comfortable neighborhood destination, and its sudden destruction has left a noticeable void in the community.
Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. Prettyman firmly believes the backup solar panel batteries became dangerously overcharged by the sun, triggering the chain of events that led to the disaster. For now, investigators have instructed him to stay away from the building until their work is complete.
During the battle to control the blaze, one Baltimore firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital with what officials say were minor injuries. Thankfully, no civilian injuries were reported, though several customers were forced to retreat quickly when the fire broke out.
By Monday, all that remained of the once-busy golf center was a charred shell. Longtime customer Forrest Warman expressed disbelief, saying he had to see the aftermath with his own eyes because he couldn’t quite process that the building was gone. Like many others, he described the loss as unfortunate, not only for golfers but for the entire community.
Despite the devastation, the owner has already voiced plans for the future. Once the fire investigation concludes, the remains of the building will be demolished, and a rebuilding effort will begin. While the Bayview Golf Center’s structure may have been reduced to ashes, its place in the hearts of Baltimore residents remains intact, with hope that it will rise again.
