Bangkok Road Collapse Creates Giant Sinkhole
A dramatic scene unfolded in central Bangkok when a section of road suddenly gave way, creating a massive sinkhole that swallowed up part of a busy street. The collapse happened near Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road in the Dusit district, and it left residents and commuters stunned. Luckily, no lives were lost, but three vehicles were caught in the incident and damaged as the ground gave way.
Bangkok’s Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, explained that early investigations point to nearby construction as the likely cause. Work has been ongoing for a new underground railway station, and it is believed that this may have weakened the road above. When the sinkhole opened, it did so gradually, with the surface sinking before tearing open into a deep pit. Videos shared on social media captured the shocking moment as cars tried desperately to reverse, while electricity poles tilted and pipes burst under the strain.

One edge of the sinkhole stopped alarmingly close to a police station, where the building’s underground structure was left exposed. For safety, the police station was evacuated, along with several nearby buildings, to prevent any further risk.
Vajira Hospital, which sits just beside the site, announced it would close outpatient services for two days while the situation is stabilized. City officials confirmed that the hospital’s main building had not been structurally affected, but they moved quickly to shut down water and electricity supplies in the immediate area.
The timing of this disaster has raised additional concerns, as Bangkok is currently in the middle of its monsoon season. Heavy rainfall could worsen the damage or trigger more collapses. Governor Chadchart assured the public that repair crews are working urgently to secure the area, fill the hole, and restore traffic flow, but he acknowledged that weather conditions pose a serious challenge.
Incidents like this highlight the fragile balance between rapid urban development and the safety of city infrastructure. Bangkok, a city already known for flooding and ground subsidence, faces added risks whenever large-scale construction projects are carried out beneath its streets. For residents and commuters, the sight of a road simply disappearing beneath their feet has been a chilling reminder of those risks.
Although the sinkhole caused disruption, damage, and fear, the absence of casualties was considered a small relief. For now, all eyes remain on the repair work and the ongoing investigation into how and why this collapse occurred, as officials move quickly to prevent any further danger in one of the busiest parts of Thailand’s capital.
