Brock Purdy sidelined, 49ers turn to Mac Jones at QB

The San Francisco 49ers have been dealt an early-season setback, and it revolves around their star quarterback, Brock Purdy. Reports have confirmed that Purdy will be out for at least two to five weeks, dealing with a painful combination of turf toe and a left shoulder issue. This news lands just as the team had begun its campaign with a gritty 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks, a game in which Purdy threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns but also tossed a pair of interceptions.

The timing could hardly be worse for San Francisco. Purdy had just signed a blockbuster five-year, $265 million deal this offseason, cementing his place as the franchise’s cornerstone. But now, instead of leading the offense into Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, he’ll be sidelined, with the team forced to pivot to backup Mac Jones.

Jones, who joined the 49ers after a stop in Jacksonville, brings with him four seasons of NFL experience. Many remember him as the quarterback the Niners once considered drafting back in 2021, before they went with Trey Lance. Now, by circumstance, he finally gets the chance to lead San Francisco’s offense. His track record has been mixed: he showed promise as a rookie in New England with a Pro Bowl appearance, but his numbers since then have been uneven, including a 2-5 record as a starter with the Jaguars last year. Still, his veteran presence provides some stability compared to the patchwork quarterback solutions San Francisco turned to in Purdy’s absence last season.

The team’s situation is even more complicated because Purdy isn’t the only starter missing. Tight end George Kittle has already been placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, meaning the 49ers will have to move forward without two of their most important offensive weapons. Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted earlier this week that Purdy’s chances of suiting up in Week 2 were a “long shot,” and by Thursday, it was made clear he would miss multiple games.

For fans, the concern is obvious. Without Purdy, the 49ers went 0-2 last year, losing those games by wide margins. While those losses came under the guidance of different backups, the memory of an offense sputtering without their starting quarterback still lingers. The upcoming stretch of games—against the Saints, Cardinals, Jaguars, Rams, and Buccaneers—now looks much more challenging, and the spotlight will be firmly on Jones to see if he can steady the ship.

Purdy’s absence may be temporary, but its impact could be long-lasting if the 49ers stumble during this stretch. Turf toe may sound minor, but it’s notorious for being both painful and slow to heal, and adding a shoulder issue into the mix complicates his recovery. For now, all eyes shift to Mac Jones, who steps into a role he has long been connected to but never actually held—leading the San Francisco 49ers under center.
