Cardi B Cleared of $24M Assault Lawsuit in Los Angeles

Rapper Cardi B has officially been cleared by a Los Angeles jury in a highly publicized civil trial where she was accused of assaulting a security guard back in 2018. The case, which had been hanging over her for years, was resolved in less than an hour of jury deliberation. And just like that, the Grammy-winning artist walked away without owing a single dime in damages.

So here’s what went down. The lawsuit was brought by Emani Ellis, a security guard who claimed that Cardi scratched her face with one of her famously long fingernails and even spat on her outside an OB-GYN’s office. This was at a time when Cardi was four months pregnant, though her pregnancy wasn’t publicly known yet. Ellis argued that the confrontation left her traumatized, with injuries that required plastic surgery, and she sued for a staggering $24 million.

Inside the courtroom, things got heated, to say the least. Cardi admitted that there had been a shouting match that day, but she flatly denied ever scratching or spitting on Ellis. Instead, she told the jury that Ellis had been following her around, recording her, and even revealing her pregnancy over the phone — something Cardi was desperate to keep private at the time. Witnesses, including her doctor’s receptionist, backed Cardi’s account, saying Ellis was actually the aggressor and had even swung her arms in a way that ended up injuring someone else.

The trial wasn’t without its viral moments. Cardi B changed wigs and outfits nearly every day, and even her nails became a talking point in court. At one point, a fan outside the courthouse held a sign that read, “If the nail don’t fit, u must acquit,” a playful nod to the O.J. Simpson trial — and yes, Cardi reportedly laughed when she saw it.

When the verdict was read, the jury cleared Cardi on all counts — assault, battery, emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment. In other words, they didn’t buy Ellis’s claims. After the decision, Cardi B spoke passionately to reporters. She reminded everyone that she works hard for her money and her family and made it clear she wouldn’t be an easy target for anyone looking for a quick payout. Still, she also urged her fans not to harass Ellis or her family now that the case was over.

Even outside the trial, drama followed. At one point, Cardi snapped at a man who asked an invasive question about her personal life, tossing a pen his way and demanding respect. She made it clear that just because she’s a celebrity, people don’t get a free pass to be disrespectful.

In the end, this trial was as much about protecting her name as it was about fighting a lawsuit. And for Cardi B, the victory not only cleared her legally, but it also reinforced her message: she may be outspoken, but she won’t be taken advantage of.
