Chaos at Ewood Park as Rain Halts Blackburn vs Ipswich Clash
What was supposed to be a decisive Championship clash between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town turned into absolute chaos on Saturday afternoon. With less than fifteen minutes left to play, the match was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch after relentless rainfall in the north-west.
The drama unfolded at Ewood Park where Blackburn were holding a 1-0 lead thanks to a Todd Cantwell penalty scored just after the hour mark. To make matters worse for Ipswich, they were down to ten men following Jacob Greaves’ red card in the 49th minute. Rovers appeared to be in complete control, and with the clock ticking toward full-time, home fans were already beginning to celebrate what looked like a well-earned victory.
But football has a way of throwing up the unexpected. Around the 79th minute, referee Stephen Martin halted play, signaling players from both sides to leave the field. Heavy rain had been pouring non-stop, leaving large puddles across the pitch and making the surface unplayable. Groundsmen rushed on with forks to try and clear standing water, but conditions only worsened as the downpour continued.

Supporters were asked to remain in their seats while officials inspected the pitch. For more than 20 minutes, fans of both sides waited anxiously for news. Ipswich’s social media channels even remarked that it was still “chucking it down” as players stayed inside the tunnel. Many Blackburn fans, frustrated by the delay and soaked through from the rain, decided to leave early despite their team being on the brink of victory.
Eventually, the referee made the call no one wanted to hear—the game was officially abandoned. Both clubs confirmed the decision on social media, with Blackburn posting that the referee had called it off due to the waterlogged surface. Ipswich shared similar updates, acknowledging the disappointment and confusion among traveling supporters.
Now the big question is what happens next. According to EFL rules, any league match that doesn’t reach the full 90 minutes can either be ordered to count as completed or be replayed in full or in part, at the discretion of the league board. That means Blackburn’s 1-0 lead may not stand, and the game could potentially be replayed from scratch. For Rovers fans, that feels like a cruel twist after being so close to victory.
The abandonment sparked plenty of anger online, with some home supporters branding it a “joke” given their numerical advantage and late lead. On the other hand, Ipswich fans may feel relieved, as their team was up against the wall and battling just to hang on.
In the end, Ewood Park became the latest reminder that football is sometimes at the mercy of the weather. What started as a tense Championship battle ended with soaked fans, frustrated players, and an uncertain outcome that will now be decided in boardrooms rather than on the pitch. For now, Blackburn will have to wait to see if their hard work is rewarded—or if they must start all over again.
