Charleston White’s Heated Exit at Tougaloo College Sparks Backlash
A viral moment has been making waves online, and it involves comedian and self-proclaimed motivational speaker Charleston White. He was invited to speak at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, during what was supposed to be an academic discussion on hip-hop and the culture of “snitching.” But instead of finishing his talk, White stormed out in the middle of the event, leaving students shocked, angry, and confused.
From the video that circulated online, it was clear that tensions escalated quickly. White made remarks that were viewed as disrespectful toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities, even dismissing their importance. At one point, he told the audience, “I don’t give a damn about no HBCU, I went to a white school.” That comment, along with others criticizing African Americans, instantly shifted the energy in the room. Students could be heard questioning why someone would say such things in front of Black students on an HBCU campus. One student described the behavior as “disrespectful not only to the students, but also to the campus and its history.”
According to accounts from attendees, the heated exchange began when White’s perspective was challenged during the discussion. Instead of continuing the dialogue, he chose to leave abruptly. Students described his exit as confusing and unprofessional. Some even suggested that he “ran away from questions he couldn’t answer.”

The fallout didn’t end there. Tougaloo College quickly launched an investigation, with the president, Donzell Lee, clarifying that the event had never been approved. Administrators had reportedly denied the organizers’ request for a venue days before the gathering, meaning the discussion technically should not have happened at all. Now, officials are looking closely into how it was arranged, promising to take appropriate action once the investigation concludes.
Ironically, the incident has sparked even more conversation among students. Many have expressed that, while the outburst was troubling, it also motivated them to speak up more about issues they care about. For some, the disruption highlighted the importance of protecting the integrity and values of their institution.
Charleston White later responded to the backlash, claiming in a now-deleted Instagram post that he was only told about the event ten minutes before it started and felt ambushed. He framed his exit as a reaction to being put on the spot. Still, the perception left on campus was largely negative.
This isn’t the first time White has found himself at the center of controversy. His outspoken views on race, hip-hop culture, and the Black community often spark heated reactions. While he’s built a following on provocative commentary, his departure from Tougaloo serves as yet another reminder of how divisive his presence can be.
For Tougaloo College, the episode may be remembered less for the comedian’s outburst and more for the lessons it left behind: the importance of vetting speakers, the strength of student voices, and the resilience of an HBCU community when its values are challenged.
