Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill’s Routine Secrets for Back-to-School Success
When it comes to juggling family life, careers, and early morning chaos, few people understand the discipline needed quite like Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. Known across Britain as the heptathlon champion who captured Olympic gold on that unforgettable “Super Saturday” in 2012, Jessica has now turned her focus from the track to the home, and she says the lessons she learned in sport are the very same ones helping her manage school mornings with her two children.
Jessica recently partnered with Weetabix to share her tips on how to bring calm and structure to family life, especially during the hectic back-to-school season. She admits that the pressures of parenting can sometimes feel as tough as training, but with a solid plan, mornings can run smoothly. According to her, the secret is routine. “A solid plan is essential to stay calm,” she explains. “Whether it was chasing medals on the track or managing the morning rush with my kids, the principles are exactly the same.”

At home in Sheffield with her husband Andy and their children Reggie, 11, and Liv, 7, Jessica keeps mornings structured and consistent. Andy is always the first out of bed to let the dog, Lenny, out, while the children—thanks to Jessica’s encouragement of independence—get themselves washed and dressed. By the time everyone is gathered in the kitchen, breakfast becomes a family ritual. She describes those moments around the kitchen island as not just about food, but about connection: the chance to talk through the school day, share news, or deal with little worries before heading out.
Breakfast, of course, is non-negotiable. As a professional athlete, Jessica knew that food was the fuel for performance, and she carries that belief into family life. She grew up eating Weetabix and still swears by it, now serving it to her children before school. For her, it’s about starting strong—because a good beginning often sets up the whole day for success. Whether topped with strawberries in summer or enjoyed with warm milk in winter, Weetabix remains her go-to.
Jessica also highlights the importance of giving children ownership of their own routines. She has taught her kids to manage their mornings, pack their own bags, and take pride in being independent. That way, she’s freed from micromanaging every detail and can focus on guiding, rather than controlling. “My kids really like to do things themselves,” she says, “and I just make sure they’ve had a good breakfast and have what they need for school.”
Her advice stretches beyond the household too. She believes that no matter what your personal goals are—whether in sport, work, or family life—a structured plan and consistent habits create the best foundation for success. As Jessica puts it, “Everyone has a different life goal, but having a healthy approach to eating, activity, and routine can really help you achieve great things.”
Coming from someone who once conquered the world stage and now conquers the school run, it’s advice worth taking.
