David Fry Injured After Foul Ball to the Face in Guardians Game
It was a frightening moment at Progressive Field when Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry had to leave the game early after being struck in the face by a foul ball off his own bat. The incident happened in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers, and it immediately drew concern from both teams and the crowd.
Here’s how it unfolded. With the Guardians trailing 2-1 and runners on first and third, Fry squared around to bunt against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. It was a 2-1 count, and Skubal fired in a blazing 99 mile-per-hour fastball on the inner half of the plate. Fry managed to make contact, but instead of the ball rolling into play, it ricocheted directly into his face. He went down immediately, falling flat on his back in the batter’s box while covering his face.

Medical staff rushed to his side within seconds. Trainers Jeff Desjardins and Chad Wolfe, along with team doctor Kim Stearns, treated him on the field as the crowd fell into a stunned silence. A cart was quickly brought out, and while Fry was able to stand and make it to the cart under his own power, blood was visible from his nose as he exited. He was transported to Lutheran Medical Center for further evaluation.
On the mound, Skubal was visibly shaken by the accident. The left-hander froze as soon as Fry was struck, throwing down his glove and cap before putting his hands on his head in disbelief. Despite trying to regain composure, his command unraveled afterward, and the inning turned disastrous for Detroit.
George Valera came in to finish Fry’s at-bat, striking out, but the Guardians’ rally continued. Steven Kwan had started things off with a bunt single, followed by Angel MartÃnez reaching on an error, and José RamÃrez adding an infield hit. Skubal then threw a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score. Moments later, RamÃrez advanced on a balk and later crossed the plate on a groundout, putting Cleveland ahead 3-2 by the end of the inning.
What began as a scary individual moment ended up swinging momentum for the Guardians. While fans and players alike were shaken by Fry’s injury, the team rallied together and managed to grab the lead. For Detroit, it was a nightmare inning that erased an early two-run advantage.
As for Fry, all eyes are on his recovery. The Guardians confirmed he was being further assessed at Lutheran Medical Center, but no additional details were immediately available. It was an incident that served as a reminder of how quickly the game can change—not just on the scoreboard, but in the lives of the players who take the field.
