Delta State Student’s Death Sparks Shock and Questions
Authorities in Mississippi have released the name of the Delta State University student who was found dead on campus early Monday morning. The young man was identified as 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed from Grenada. His body was discovered around 7 a.m. by a faculty member near the pickleball courts, and what was seen was described as a Black male hanging from a tree.
The university president, Daniel Ennis, addressed the campus community with heavy words, saying that the loss has deeply shaken everyone connected to Delta State. He offered condolences to Reed’s family, his friends, and anyone touched by his passing. As a sign of mourning, classes were canceled for the day, leaving a campus stunned and unsettled.
University Police Chief Mike Peeler confirmed that an immediate investigation began once the discovery was reported. Reed’s body was turned over to the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, along with the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department, joined the inquiry. Chief Peeler emphasized that, at this stage, no signs of foul play had been uncovered.

The remains have been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for a full autopsy, and authorities have urged patience as those results are awaited.
Even as officials spoke carefully about the absence of evidence suggesting an attack, the atmosphere on campus has remained tense. Students expressed feelings of fear and unease, especially among Black students who said the circumstances made them question their safety. Some voiced that they wanted clearer answers before they could feel secure moving across campus again.
Reed’s family has also been outspoken. While they described Trey as a “quiet light” — kind, sweet, and well-mannered — they also made it clear that they expect a thorough investigation. One cousin urged the public not to let the matter be brushed aside, calling for close attention to the facts and transparency from authorities.
Officials have reiterated that there is no ongoing threat to campus safety. Still, the discovery has left many unsettled, and questions linger as the community waits for more information from the coroner and state investigators.
At this moment, Trey Reed is remembered not just as a student, but as a beloved son, relative, and friend whose life ended far too soon. His family has asked for prayers and support as they face this sudden and heartbreaking loss. While the investigation continues, the story has become a somber reminder of how deeply a tragedy on campus can ripple through an entire community.
