Did Beyoncé Really Scrap a Dancehall Album Over a Leak?
So here’s the story that’s been buzzing—Mr. Vegas, the Jamaican dancehall artist, has made a pretty bold claim about Beyoncé. According to him, Beyoncé once had an entire dancehall project in the works, but after one of the songs leaked, she supposedly scrapped the whole thing. Now, it sounds dramatic, but when you start digging into the details, the timeline doesn’t exactly line up.
Mr. Vegas shared this in a recent interview with DJ Vlad. He explained how he got connected to Beyoncé not long after his 2012 hit Bruk It Down. He was brought in to work on what was being described as a super-secret project. He even joked that it felt like dealing with “top secret files” because of all the codes, confidentiality agreements, and tight security involved. The idea was for him to help Beyoncé capture an authentic dancehall sound, so he took the project back to Jamaica. There, he linked up with producers like Danny Browne—famous for Heads High —and Clevie from Steely & Clevie, so he could deliver something truly raw.
Vegas said Beyoncé wasn’t interested in a polished, pop-reggae vibe like her earlier Baby Boy with Sean Paul. Instead, she wanted the raw, unfiltered dancehall energy. But according to him, things went left after a song they worked on leaked. He recalled that people were already calling him, telling him he had a number one hit with Beyoncé on East Coast radio stations. And then, in his words, Beyoncé scrapped the whole project.

He remembered an engineer even playing him parts of her so-called dancehall album, including Standing on the Sun. But within days, Beyoncé dropped her surprise self-titled album in December 2013, and none of that leaked material was included. Vegas said he figured she was angry about the leak, and that’s why she pivoted. He ended the story by saying, “It would have been another Baby Boy —just my luck.”
But here’s where the facts don’t quite add up. Standing on the Sun first surfaced in April 2013 through an H&M campaign, and the full version leaked online in June. Beyoncé’s self-titled album didn’t arrive until December that year. On top of that, she had already been filming visuals for that project between June and November while touring. So, the idea that she suddenly scrapped a whole dancehall album because of a leak doesn’t really hold up.
That said, it’s not impossible Beyoncé has a stash of unreleased tracks in different genres. Jay-Z even once admitted she has “100,000 amazing songs” in the vault. And while Standing on the Sun was left off the surprise album, it did get a reggae remix on the Platinum Edition the following year—and she’s still performed it on tour.
So, maybe Mr. Vegas remembers events differently, or maybe some of the details have been blurred over time. Either way, it adds to the mystique around Beyoncé’s creative process. With her rumored upcoming album said to lean into rock, it’s clear she’s always experimenting—and there’s probably a mountain of unreleased gems the world has yet to hear.
