Donnarumma’s Big Manchester Derby Debut for City
The stage has been set for one of the most anticipated fixtures in English football—the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium. But this time, there is a fresh twist in the tale. Pep Guardiola has made a bold and eye-catching decision that has caught the attention of fans everywhere. Gianluigi Donnarumma, signed for £26 million on deadline day, has been handed his debut for Manchester City, and it just so happens to come in one of the most high-pressure matches of the season.
It’s not often that a goalkeeper is thrust straight into the starting lineup for such a huge game, but Guardiola has spoken highly of the Italian shot-stopper’s experience and presence. At just 26, Donnarumma already has years of top-level football behind him, having played on some of the grandest stages in world football. Guardiola described him as tall, commanding, and someone who can give confidence to his teammates. He admitted that mistakes and goals conceded are part of the game, but what matters most is the trust he places in his new number one.

City will, however, be without some key players for this clash. Omar Marmoush misses out after picking up a knee injury on international duty with Egypt. He joins Rayan Ait-Nouri, Ryan Cherki, and Mateo Kovacic on the sidelines. John Stones is also absent, having withdrawn from England duty during the recent international break. Despite these setbacks, there is positive news for Guardiola. Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, and Abdukodir Khusanov have all returned to fitness, providing a timely boost for the squad.
In fact, Gvardiol makes his first appearance of the season, lining up alongside Ruben Dias at the heart of City’s defense. Khusanov, who had been a doubt after picking up a knock against Brighton, is also cleared to play. Foden, meanwhile, will be eager to inject some spark into his season, hoping to finally kick it into gear under the bright lights of the derby.
And then, of course, there’s Erling Haaland. Fresh from scoring six goals across two games for Norway, he leads the line once again. Haaland already has a formidable record against Manchester United, and with his eyes firmly on the Golden Boot, few would bet against him finding the net yet again.
So here’s how City line up: Donnarumma in goal, Khusanov and Dias joined by Gvardiol at the back, O’Reilly and Rodri in midfield alongside captain Bernardo Silva. Foden, Reijnders, and Doku provide the attacking support behind Haaland.
All eyes will be on Donnarumma’s first steps in a City shirt, but as always, the Manchester derby promises to be about much more than one player. It’s pride, rivalry, and the pursuit of Premier League glory all rolled into ninety minutes at the Etihad.
