ECHL Mourns the Loss of Orca Wiesblatt
The hockey world has been shaken by some heartbreaking news. The ECHL, along with its teams and fans, is mourning the sudden passing of Orca Wiesblatt. He was just 25 years old and tragically lost his life in a car accident over the weekend.
Wiesblatt was preparing for an exciting new chapter in his career. He had signed a contract to play with the Allen Americans for the upcoming 2025–26 season. For him, it was more than just another step—it was a chance to continue building on the strong momentum he had created in recent years.
In the 2024–25 season, he put up an impressive performance with Athens of the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Over just 37 games, he tallied 42 points, including 17 goals and 25 assists. Those numbers showed not only his offensive skill but also his consistency and drive. Before that, he made his professional debut in the 2023–24 season with Pensacola of the SPHL, getting his first taste of pro hockey in four games.

Long before turning pro, Wiesblatt had already made a name for himself in the Western Hockey League. Playing four seasons with the Calgary Hitmen, he collected 104 points across 138 games. Those years in the WHL shaped his foundation as both a player and a teammate, and they marked him as someone with the grit and determination to push forward.
Steve Martinson, the Head Coach and General Manager of the Allen Americans, spoke with deep emotion about the loss. He explained that the team was not just losing a skilled hockey player but also a personality that lifted those around him. Martinson recalled Wiesblatt’s ability to shift momentum with big hits and the unforgettable smile he would flash when coming back to the bench after delivering one. That smile, Martinson said, is what people will miss most.
