Ego Nwodim Exits ‘SNL’ After Seven Memorable Seasons
Big news just dropped from the world of Saturday Night Live, and it’s one that longtime fans are definitely feeling. Ego Nwodim, who joined the cast back in 2018, has announced that she will not be returning for Season 51 of the iconic NBC sketch comedy show. After seven seasons, she’s officially saying goodbye to Studio 8H, and the timing has surprised many since it was thought the new cast lineup was already locked in for the upcoming premiere on October 4.
Ego made the announcement with a heartfelt message, saying, “The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight. But after seven unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave SNL. I am immensely grateful to Lorne Michaels for the opportunity, to my castmates, the writers, and the crew for their brilliance, support, and friendship. Week after week on that stage taught me more than I could have ever imagined, and I will carry those memories, and that laughter, with me always.”

For fans, this is a bittersweet moment. Over the years, Nwodim carved out her place on SNL with a mix of sharp characters and unforgettable sketches. Who could forget her viral turn as Lisa from Temecula, a lawyer obsessed with overcooked steak that threw dinner tables into chaos? Or her wild and unpredictable Miss Eggy, who turned a live audience call-and-response into one of the most chaotic moments of the season? She also shined with impersonations like Dionne Warwick, earning plenty of laughs and social media buzz along the way.
Her departure comes during a season of major changes. Alongside Ego, several other cast members won’t be back, including Heidi Gardner, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker. With all these exits, Season 51 is shaping up to feel very different, though Lorne Michaels has already brought in fresh faces to round out the cast.
Even with this transition, it seems clear that Nwodim isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In recent years, she’s already been stretching her wings outside of SNL with roles in Peacock’s Poker Face, the Netflix film Little Brother alongside John Cena and Michelle Monaghan, and other projects. She’s been open about her hopes to do more TV and film, calling her time on SNL a dream come true but also making it clear she’s ready for her next chapter.
Her exit feels especially poignant coming so soon after the big SNL 50th anniversary celebration earlier this year. Surrounded by legends and alumni, Nwodim reflected then on the honor of being part of such a small, historic group of performers. And now, stepping away after that milestone, it almost feels like she’s leaving on the perfect note.
So, while fans may miss her sketches and characters on Saturday nights, it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot more of Ego Nwodim in the years ahead. She’s closing one chapter but clearly opening the door to plenty of new opportunities.
