Evergreen High School Tragedy Leaves Community in Shock
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Evergreen High School in Colorado on Wednesday, leaving the community shaken and grieving. Authorities confirmed that a male student opened fire on his classmates during the school day, injuring two before turning the gun on himself. Hours later, it was announced that the suspected shooter had died from his self-inflicted wound.
The incident began shortly after noon, when the first 911 call was placed at 12:24 p.m. Within minutes, law enforcement officers and emergency crews rushed to the campus, responding to what was described as an “active assailant” situation. More than 100 officers from surrounding agencies assisted in the rapid response. Students and staff were quickly secured, and the school was searched room by room to rule out additional threats or explosives.
Two students were struck by gunfire. One of them remains in critical condition, while the other suffered less severe injuries and was stabilized before being transferred to another facility. Both victims were treated at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Health Center. Officials later updated that one student’s condition had improved to “fair.”

According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley, the shooter used a revolver during the attack. Shots were fired both inside and outside of the building. Investigators have not yet determined what led to the violence. Kelley stressed that law enforcement did not fire any rounds during the response, and the suspect’s injuries were solely self-inflicted.
Parents rushed to a reunification site at nearby Bergen Meadow Elementary School, desperate for news about their children. Tearful hugs and visible relief were seen as students were released to their families. Witnesses described the chaos of the moment. One freshman said he heard a series of loud pops outside the gym and realized quickly that they were gunshots. With his phone broken, he couldn’t reach his parents and relied on school officials to help him reunite with them safely.
Community leaders spoke with raw emotion. Jefferson County School Superintendent Tracy Dorland said she was devastated and angry, calling it unimaginable that students should face such danger in their own school. Colorado Governor Jared Polis released a statement offering condolences, assuring families that state resources would be available, and reaffirming that schools must remain safe places for children to learn and grow.
In the coming days, victim advocates, mental health professionals, and school personnel will be available at a community support center to help students, staff, and families process what happened. Meanwhile, investigators have already searched the suspect’s home, though details about what was discovered have not been released.
This tragedy has left Evergreen reeling. For families, students, and staff, the shock of such violence within their community will not fade quickly. As investigators work to answer the question of why this happened, the focus now shifts to healing—supporting the victims, their families, and a community that must somehow come to terms with an unthinkable act of violence in a place that should have felt safe.
