Fall Welcomes Metro Detroit with Rain and Thunder
So here we are — fall has officially arrived in Metro Detroit. The season made its entrance right on cue with the autumnal equinox, which occurred this afternoon at 2:19 p.m. That means the sun was directly overhead at the equator, splitting day and night almost evenly. It’s a big seasonal shift, but the way it’s showing up for us here at home is a mix of cozy fall vibes and a little stormy weather.
Now, the week is not expected to stay calm and crisp. Instead, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to pop up, not just today but carrying into the middle of the week. And while some of those storms might come and go quickly, they can’t be brushed off entirely. Meteorologists have pointed out that localized heavy rain could develop in certain spots, and isolated strong wind gusts are also possible. So, while it may not be a full-on severe weather pattern, it’s definitely a week where keeping an umbrella in the car or by the door would be a smart move.

Today’s temperatures climbed into the mid-70s, which actually feels pretty pleasant for late September. And for the rest of the week, highs are expected to stay in the 70s — generally right at or a little above what’s normal for this time of year. That means while the calendar says fall, the air will still carry a touch of that late-summer warmth we’re not quite ready to let go of yet.
For many in Metro Detroit, this kind of forecast feels familiar. It’s that in-between season where you might wake up needing a jacket, only to toss it aside by midday. The only real wildcard this time is the potential for showers. If you’re planning outdoor activities — whether it’s football practice, a trip to the cider mill, or just enjoying a walk — it may be worth keeping an eye on the radar.
The start of fall always brings a sense of change, and in Michigan, that often shows up in the weather before anything else. While leaves will soon start turning colors and daylight hours continue shrinking, this first week of fall is rolling out with a reminder that the atmosphere still has some energy left in it. Thunderstorms may not be everyone’s favorite way to mark the season, but they’re part of the transition.
So, as we welcome fall in Metro Detroit, the best approach is probably a flexible one: enjoy the mild temperatures while they last, watch out for those passing showers, and keep in mind that the crisp, dry autumn days we look forward to are likely not too far behind.
