Flames Lock Up Dustin Wolf With Long-Term Deal
The Calgary Flames have made a major move to secure their future in goal, as goaltender Dustin Wolf has been signed to a seven-year, $52.5 million contract extension. This deal ensures that one of the NHL’s brightest young stars will remain a key piece of the Flames’ core for years to come.
Wolf’s extension comes after what can only be described as a breakout rookie season. At just 24 years old, he appeared in 53 games for Calgary last year, posting a 29-16-8 record. His .910 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average placed him among the NHL’s more reliable netminders, while his three shutouts and league-leading rookie totals in both wins and saves demonstrated how quickly he has adapted to the demands of the NHL. His efforts were rewarded with a Calder Trophy nomination, finishing as the runner-up for the league’s top rookie honor.

The Flames’ front office, led by general manager Craig Conroy, made it clear that Wolf was viewed as the long-term answer in net. Not only does this deal carry an average annual value of $7.5 million, but it also includes a 10-team no-trade clause in the later years of the contract, signaling the confidence Calgary has in him. For now, Wolf will finish out the final year of his entry-level extension with a cap hit of just $850,000 before the new contract kicks in.
What makes this story even more impressive is Wolf’s journey to this point. Selected in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft, expectations were modest. Yet at every level, he has overdelivered. He was a two-time WHL Goaltender of the Year with the Everett Silvertips, a CHL Goaltender of the Year, a two-time AHL Goaltender of the Year, and even won league MVP honors in the AHL in 2023. His track record of dominance carried over seamlessly to the NHL, where he has already established himself as a cornerstone player.
For the Flames, this deal is part of a broader strategy to lock up young talent long-term. Wolf now joins Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, Mackenzie Weegar, Kevin Bahl, and several other core players who are signed through at least the 2028–29 season. With Connor Zary also signed to a three-year extension recently, Calgary is signaling its commitment to building a stable, competitive roster.
Looking ahead, Wolf will become the team’s second-highest paid player next season, trailing only Huberdeau. That’s a remarkable rise for someone drafted 214th overall just six years ago. His story is already one of perseverance and proof that determination, talent, and consistency can carry a player from underdog status to franchise centerpiece.
In short, the Flames have made a bet on Dustin Wolf, and based on everything he’s shown so far, it looks like a safe one. Calgary fans can look forward to seeing their young star in net for the next seven seasons, giving the team the stability every contender needs between the pipes.
