Harvey Elliott Set for Aston Villa Move in £35m Deal
It’s shaping up to be one of the biggest talking points of transfer deadline day — Harvey Elliott, the Liverpool midfielder, is on his way to Aston Villa. A deal has been agreed between the two clubs for a season-long loan with an obligation to buy next summer. The structure of the move has been carefully put together to ensure Villa remain compliant with UEFA’s financial rules. Liverpool sources suggest the total package is around £35 million, while Villa’s side of the camp believe the figure could be slightly less, closer to £30 million. Either way, the 22-year-old is now traveling to Birmingham for his medical.
For Aston Villa, this is a significant moment. Their summer window had been relatively quiet up until now, with only Evann Guessand and Marco Bizot joining Unai Emery’s squad. At the same time, a few midfielders like Jacob Ramsey and Leander Dendoncker have been moved on, leaving a gap for a creative influence in the middle of the pitch. Emery has been vocal about wanting someone who can play between the lines and unlock defenses, and Elliott fits that profile perfectly. Villa’s lack of goals at the start of the season has only made this pursuit more urgent, and the club has also been exploring a move for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

From Liverpool’s perspective, Elliott’s departure comes as part of a major squad reshuffle. This summer alone has seen several big names leave Anfield, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and Caoimhín Kelleher. On the incoming side, Liverpool have been making headlines with their record-breaking move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, a deal worth around £125 million. With Isak coming in as a marquee signing, it became clear that someone like Elliott, who had limited game time early this season, might have to seek opportunities elsewhere.
That doesn’t mean Elliott hasn’t left his mark at Liverpool. Since joining from Fulham back in 2019, he’s racked up 147 appearances and lifted six trophies. Most recently, he was named Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 European Championship, where England secured back-to-back titles with a victory over Germany. He even scored in the final, showing once again that he thrives on the big stage.
Earlier in the summer, RB Leipzig had shown interest in signing him, but Liverpool’s valuation — upwards of £40 million with a buy-back clause — kept negotiations from progressing. Now, Villa have seized the chance to bring in a player who can offer both creativity and versatility.
If all goes to plan with his medical, Harvey Elliott will officially be a Villa player, at least on loan for now, with the permanent switch lined up for next summer. For Villa, it could be the spark they need in attack. For Liverpool, it’s another step in a summer of sweeping change.
