Hilaria Baldwin Sets Record Straight on Her 'DWTS' Journey
So here’s the buzz — Hilaria Baldwin, wife of actor Alec Baldwin, has opened up about the real story behind how she joined Season 34 of Dancing With the Stars . And according to her, the version people have been hearing isn’t quite accurate.

It all started when Julianne Hough, one of the show’s co-hosts, spoke on a podcast earlier this month. She claimed that Hilaria had basically “campaigned” her way onto the lineup. Hough pointed out that Hilaria had been posting lots of dancing clips with Alec on TikTok, many of which went viral, and suggested that those videos worked like a pitch to get her cast. In her words: “That was a campaign, and she won.”
But Hilaria says that’s just not true. In an exclusive chat with Page Six, she explained that campaigning was never on her radar. In fact, she said the opportunity came as a complete surprise. Just days before the announcement was made, producers called her directly and asked if she wanted to do the show. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and she had to move her entire family to Los Angeles almost overnight. “You heard it here first,” she told them. “That is the true story.”
She even joked that she hears “a lot of things” about herself that aren’t true, so this rumor didn’t surprise her too much. But she wanted to make sure people understood exactly how it all happened.
Of course, the chatter didn’t stop there. Some critics online have been arguing that she has an unfair advantage because of her past in ballroom dance. Hilaria admitted that she did compete years ago, but she also reminded everyone that she suffered a serious hip injury that forced her to stop. Sixteen years later, she still deals with pain every day, and the fact that she’s dancing again feels emotional and healing. “I wanted to cry,” she said, describing how special it felt to perform again after so long.
On premiere night, Hilaria and her partner Gleb Savchenko hit the floor in matching neon green outfits, performing a Cha Cha to Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud.” They earned a 14 out of 20 from the judges. And even though it wasn’t a perfect score, she called the experience “a dream come true.”
Her husband Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen were in the audience, proudly cheering her on in “Team Hilaria” hats, making the night even more meaningful. And to top it off, it happened to be Gleb’s birthday, which gave the whole celebration an extra boost of joy.
At the end of the day, Hilaria said the competition doesn’t feel cutthroat. Instead, she described it as warm, supportive, and filled with talented people who inspire her. For her, just being back on stage and sharing that moment with her family in the audience was already a victory.
