Historic Norwegian Sweep Shines at 2025 IRONMAN World Championship
The 2025 IRONMAN World Championship in Nice, France, delivered a day of unforgettable drama and athletic excellence, culminating in a historic moment for Norwegian triathlon. Casper Stornes emerged as the surprise star, leading an incredible one-two-three finish for Norway on the prestigious French Riviera course.
Stornes, who had long competed in the shadow of his celebrated compatriots Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt, stepped up in spectacular fashion. This was his first IRONMAN World Championship, yet he delivered a performance that will be remembered for years. His marathon, run in an astonishing 2 hours, 29 minutes, and 25 seconds, made him the first man ever to break the 2:30 barrier at this event. Crossing the finish line in 7 hours, 51 minutes, and 36 seconds, he finished over two minutes ahead of Iden, while Blummenfelt rounded out the podium despite struggling with cramp late in the race.
The race itself had drama from the very beginning. Sam Laidlow of France, the previous winner at the last IRONMAN held on the Riviera, faced a nightmare start in the swim, momentarily coming to a standstill in the calm, non-wetsuit Mediterranean waters. Meanwhile, leaders like Jamie Riddle, Andrea Salvisberg, Jonas Schomburg, and Marten Van Riel surged ahead, setting a blistering pace. By the first checkpoint on the hilly 180-kilometer bike course, the competition was already beginning to separate, with Stornes biding his time in the chase group.

On the bike, the front pack saw constant shifts. Schomburg, Van Riel, and Riddle initially broke clear, but by the latter stages, Stornes, Iden, and Blummenfelt began their decisive move. As the race approached T2, the Norwegian trio had positioned themselves within striking distance of the leaders, setting the stage for a thrilling run.
The marathon leg delivered the defining moments. Early on, the five-man lead pack featured the three Norwegians alongside Laidlow and Van Riel. Stornes methodically bridged the gap to his teammates and, as the race progressed, gradually asserted control. Iden and Blummenfelt made valiant efforts, but it was Stornes who ultimately glided into the lead, maintaining a commanding pace that secured a historic clean sweep for Norway.
It was a day that showcased both strategy and sheer endurance, highlighting not only individual brilliance but also the strength of Norwegian triathlon. The final results saw Stornes, Iden, and Blummenfelt on the podium, followed by Van Riel and Laidlow, who staged a remarkable recovery despite his challenging swim.
Beyond the elite competition, the 2025 IRONMAN in Nice was a celebration of the sport. Over 2,500 athletes experienced the vibrant IRONMAN Village, test swims in the Baie des Anges, and community events including the IRONKIDS race and the Fun Run. The atmosphere was electric, with athletes from 86 nations taking part in the Parade of Nations and celebrating together at the Welcome Banquet.
In short, the 2025 IRONMAN World Championship was a masterclass in endurance, drama, and sportsmanship, with Casper Stornes and his fellow Norwegians etching their names into triathlon history.
