Javonte Williams Delivers First Touchdown of NFL Season
The 2025 NFL season kicked off with fireworks, and one of the biggest early storylines came from the Dallas Cowboys’ newest running back, Javonte Williams. In his first regular season game with the team, Williams wasted no time making his presence felt, scoring the very first touchdown of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
It happened on the Cowboys’ opening drive. Before most fans even settled into their seats, a moment of controversy shifted the game. Philadelphia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, a second-team All-Pro, was ejected before the very first play for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. Williams was brought in to give the Cowboys’ run game toughness and versatility, and scoring the first touchdown of the entire NFL season was a statement that his role will be no small one.
Oddsmakers had seen it coming — Williams entered the game with the second-shortest odds among Cowboys players to score the game’s first touchdown, just behind Lamb. And for those who had him, the payoff was sweet. For everyone else, it was a reminder that this Cowboys offense may not look the same without Micah Parsons on defense, but it still has plenty of firepower.
History was also on the line. Williams joined a list of recent players who set the tone in Week 1 by scoring the first touchdown of the NFL season — Derrick Henry did it last year, Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2023, and Gabe Davis in 2022. For Williams, this score was not just another short-yardage plunge. It was his first touchdown as a Cowboy, and it signaled that Dallas intends to run with confidence this season.
The Eagles quickly answered back with a Jalen Hurts touchdown to even the score, but by then, the stage had already been set. Javonte Williams had announced his arrival in Dallas in the boldest way possible: by opening the NFL season with points on the board. And for Cowboys fans, that was more than enough reason to believe this backfield might just be in good hands.
