Johnny Depp’s Dog Attack Sparks Sussex Controversy
It seems Johnny Depp just can’t stay out of the headlines—though this time, it isn’t his career or courtroom drama that’s put him there. Instead, it’s his dog. Reports out of Sussex say Depp’s bullmastiff, a rescue named Bourbon, mauled two sheep belonging to a nearby farmer. The incident happened while the actor wasn’t even present, which has only added to the surprise and the buzz surrounding it.
According to The Sun, Bourbon had been out on a walk with one of Depp’s associates when he suddenly broke free from his handler. Once loose, the dog charged at the sheep grazing on neighboring farmland. By the time the situation was brought under control, two sheep had been killed. For the farmer, Joe Ginger, it was a serious and distressing matter. He described the attack as traumatic, not just because of the loss of livestock but also because of how violently it all happened.

Johnny Depp, who has been living in East Sussex in a mansion not far from where his late friend Jeff Beck once lived, was reportedly shaken when told what had occurred. He had been drawn to the area for its peace and quiet, but this latest incident has shattered that calm. In response, Depp is said to have acted quickly—promising to pay for the damages and immediately bringing in a professional dog trainer. Extra precautions are also being put in place to make sure nothing like this happens again.
This isn’t the first time Depp’s pets have caused controversy. Many will remember the international storm back in 2015 when Depp and then-wife Amber Heard brought their Yorkshire Terriers, Pistol and Boo, into Australia without the required quarantine paperwork. At the time, Australian officials gave the couple just 72 hours to remove the dogs from the country or risk having them put down. The saga went viral after then-agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce bluntly ordered the dogs to “bugger off.” It ended only after a public apology and legal consequences for Heard.
Now, a decade later, another dog-related headline is tied to Depp, though this one is far more tragic. While Bourbon was recently adopted by the actor from a shelter—a gesture that painted Depp as compassionate and animal-loving—the attack has left neighbors unsettled. For locals in Sussex, where livestock is part of daily life, the fear is that such a powerful dog might pose further risks if not properly controlled.
For Depp, who at 62 has been attempting to reestablish a quieter life after years of public scrutiny, this comes as yet another unwanted spotlight. Still, his willingness to take responsibility, compensate the farmer, and ensure Bourbon is properly trained may help calm the situation. Whether it will erase the shock of the incident, however, remains to be seen.
It’s a reminder that even in the most peaceful of settings, drama seems to find Johnny Depp—this time, not through the big screen or the tabloids, but through the actions of a dog he had hoped to give a second chance.
