Labor Day 2025: What’s Open, Closed, and What You Need to Know

Hey everyone, if you’re wondering whether there’s school or business today, here’s the full rundown for Labor Day 2025. It’s that unofficial end-of-summer holiday, celebrated every year on the first Monday of September. The day honors the contributions of America’s labor movement, and it’s a time when many offices, schools, and government services take a break.

First off, schools in Escambia County are officially closed. So if you were wondering whether the kids need to pack their backpacks, the answer is no—they get the day off. This also goes for most banks. While branches won’t be open today, ATMs and digital banking services will continue running as usual, so any urgent transactions can still be handled.

When it comes to mail and deliveries, the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver regular mail or packages today. Only priority mail is being processed. Similarly, FedEx and UPS have suspended their normal operations for the holiday, although critical deliveries are still being made. So if you’re waiting on a package, it might be worth checking the status for updates.

Government offices are mostly closed. This includes all departments of the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners, administrative offices, the Department of Animal Welfare and Animal Shelter, the Extension Office, and the County Clerk’s offices. Transit services are also affected—regular ECAT bus service, FlexTransit, and the UWF trolley won’t run today. However, Pensacola Beach trolleys will operate from 4 p.m. until midnight.

Trash collection schedules have been adjusted in some areas. Residential collections will generally continue as planned, but commercial collections on the mainland may be delayed by a day. So it’s a good idea to double-check with your local sanitation provider if you’re unsure.

As for libraries and other public facilities, all West Florida Public Library locations are closed, along with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Some grocery stores, like Stop & Shop and Market Basket, remain open, but larger warehouses such as Costco are closed for the day.

Labor Day is one of the 11 federal holidays recognized in the U.S., and most federal and private-sector workers are entitled to a day off. After Labor Day, the next federal holidays are Columbus Day on October 13 and Veterans Day on November 11.

So, whether you’re relaxing at home, planning a last-minute trip, or just wondering if the mail will arrive, today is officially a day to slow down and enjoy a well-earned break.
