Lachlan Murdoch Secures Control in Family Succession Battle
The Murdoch family’s long-running question of “who will lead the empire?” has finally been answered, at least for now. After years of speculation, legal disputes, and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, it’s been settled that Lachlan Murdoch will remain firmly in control of both Fox Corporation and News Corporation.
This resolution comes after what had been a tense and very private legal battle. Rupert Murdoch, now 94 years old, had faced challenges from within his own family regarding the direction of his media empire and the power structure that would shape its future. For decades, the Murdoch name has been tied to some of the most influential and controversial media outlets in the world, particularly Fox News. Naturally, the question of who inherits that kind of power has carried enormous weight.
The heart of the dispute centered around the Murdoch family trust, which held the voting shares controlling both companies. Originally, several of Rupert Murdoch’s children, including Prudence MacLeod, Elisabeth Murdoch, and James Murdoch, were positioned to hold significant influence after his passing. But that arrangement has now been undone. These three siblings, referred to in court documents as “departing members,” will no longer have powerful voting rights.

This change is significant, especially in the case of James Murdoch. He has long been openly critical of Fox News’ conservative slant and even distanced himself from the family business because of its political direction. For years, critics speculated that James might try to wrest control away from Lachlan, steering the empire toward a different editorial path. But with this new legal settlement, that possibility has been effectively removed from the equation.
Instead, the new trust arrangement leaves Lachlan and his two younger sisters, Grace and Chloe, as the holders of the controlling stakes. In other words, the next generation has been positioned to keep Lachlan in power, securing his leadership for decades to come.
What’s striking is that this decision followed a dramatic legal journey. Earlier, Rupert Murdoch had attempted to change the trust to solidify Lachlan’s future control, but a Nevada court actually ruled against him. That ruling triggered further negotiations, and ultimately, Monday’s resolution was announced as a “mutual resolution of the legal proceedings.” Both companies confirmed that all litigation is now resolved, signaling that the family has come to terms—at least officially.
For Rupert Murdoch, this ensures that his chosen son stays at the helm. For the business, it avoids what could have been years of bitter infighting at the top of two powerful media giants. And for observers of politics and media alike, it means that the conservative direction of Fox News, shaped and defended by Lachlan, is unlikely to change anytime soon.
So, after years of suspense, the Murdoch empire remains in the hands of Lachlan, the heir chosen by Rupert himself, with the drama of succession seemingly closed—for now.
